Now this may sound a bit daft, but over the last 2 days now and again I turn the key and get no ignition lights at all. But as soon as I jiggle the gear stick they come on and it starts right up. Guessing it's about to be some sort of earth fault, but why would the gear stick being juggled make the ignition lights come on?!
Haven't looked at Itbut anyone else had this? And where shall I start?

i guess wiggling the stick helps it get an earth from the greasy linkage ball joints (the front subby is rubber mounted), just add an extra earth strap from the engine to body

Will try it tomorrow. Think I'll leave it until I get no ignition lights, then try that to see what happens. I'll pick up an earth strap first thing

Fooking pile of shite this metro!
Fitted an extra earth yesterday morning and made sure the rest were clean and tidy. Hasn't made a difference. Went out this evening, started first thing. Drove 2 minutes down the road, banged some petrol in, fooker wouldn't start. Had to get it going on jump leads. Drove it 20 miles or so then just started cutting out with no warnings etc, just lose all power. Dark country lanes which were busy wasn't fun. Got to where I wanted to go, but on the way back, even worst. Cutting out, no ignition lights etc, even wiggling the gearstick wasn't doing anything. After a lot of shouting and swearing it would go again then just die. Popped the bonnet, checked everything and noticed I've got two white n black wires running from the side of the radiator to the coil of all things! WFT?! So looked at the coil and pulled the wires off. The black wire with the round thing on the front panel wasn't connected so left it there as it was, but since pulling the wire off, I've got no rev counter working. BUT it doesn't cut out.
Any ideas wtf is going on? Can get pictures of these wires tomorrow, but it drove home 140 miles spot on with no problems

i bet its that silly little resistor beside/near the coil that wants changing, had a similar issue on my austin metro, random cutting out etc and was this

Just had a thought, and yes it hurt before anyone says it..
An ignition switch should have 3 positions. 1, nothing, 2 ignition lights, then 3 engine start. Now I just realised this thing has 4. 1, nothing, 2 ignition lights, 3 ignition lights still, then 4 engine start. So thinking it maybe down to a faulty ignition switch? Springing back, 'knocking' the ignition off or something?
I bought a gallon of fuel and a box of matches earlier but its pissing down.

Ain't there an ignition relay, I've got the Haines Manuel, I've not looked in it for years I'll have a dig through the electrical circuit see what could be an issue I'd say a dodgy relay, you checked the earths and fuses
But you have fitted a toad

Sorted it now. When I picked the car up and fitted the Toad alarm,I noticed there was a earth spliced into the ignition switch earth near the fuse box, and a spade connector pushed into the fuse box. I had to remove the ignition switch wiring to the fuse box to solder the alarm wiring onto it. Seems I didn't push the spade connector all the way back in. Pushed it in, and all seems good so far.
The gearstick wiggling is still daft though but the fookers sorted now so happy days
