My friend and I are heading to the world unicycling championships in Italy in July, that can only mean one thing. ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDTRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPP!

Obviously we had to buy some crappy old van to drive/sleep/ride/party in across Europe.
Say hello to The Champmobile AKA The Voodoo Bangbus AKA Malibu Party Hotel on Wheels

Its a 17 seater LDV 400 minibus. 2.5 Non turbo diesel, pure pooooooower! Owned by a college, so its been serviced every 6 weeks
It already has an ok head unit fitted, we've been given a free sub just need to find a free amp now First thing to do was change the standard paper speakers with some pioneers I had laying about. Plugged straight in, nice easy 5 minute job.

Plans are to rip all but 6 seats out, make up a couple of beds down the sides and put a table in there somewhere. Some better lighting for when we're parked up and maybe make a unit to put my camping cooker on, thats about it.

Can't wait to set off on our adventures with it, only 6 weeks of work left!

Does your licence cover minus with that many seats tho??? I know you're taking some out but I'm pretty sure you'll need it re-classified??

I've looked it up. As long as Im using it for social use, not hire or reward, I can drive it on my Full UK Licence with 16 seats in. To get insured on it though, I'll have to take all but 6 seats out.

Heres what Direct.gov says about it:

Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the vehicles listed below:

-a passenger carrying vehicle manufactured more than 30 years before the date when it is driven and not used for hire or reward or for the carriage of more than 8 passengers
-a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats provided the following conditions are met:

i. the vehicle is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body but not for hire or reward
ii. the driver is aged 21
iii. the driver has held a car (category B) licence for at least 2 years
iv. the driver is providing the service on a voluntary basis
v. the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes or 4.25 tonnes including any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers
vi. if the driver is aged 70 or over, is able to meet the health standards for driving a D1 vehicle

When driving a minibus under these conditions you may not receive any payment or consideration for doing so other than out of pocket expenses or tow any size trailer; you may only drive minibuses in this country. Drivers aged 70 or over will need to make a special application, which involves meeting higher medical standards.

I like theseĀ  I remember when I was in school they had one of these. That one was a turbo. It was very noisey and we had to do a lot of travelling as the school was in the middle of nowhere and had no sports facilities. We would arrived at the destination deaf and choked due to the fumes that used to come in. Yet they just look so cool!

fook, I never noticed that bit!
WTF, surely those rules only apply to the UK and other countries have their own rules?

In germany you are only allowed a mad of 9 seats in total or you need to have a bus drivers licence.
Nice buy btw, how much is one of those LDVs?

Well it won't be a minibus when we're using it abroad anyway. It'll only have 6 seats and will be converted into a camper, so will technically just be a van.

nice to see a british truck tho

Forgot to say, its got Metro stalks!

they are slightly better than the metro stalks as LDV vans have the orange fiber optic icon illumination still, I'm sad but i like stuff like that! rover delelted this for cost saving although the bulb holder under the steering column stalk holders is still there so I fitted ldv stalks to my mk3 metro!

I remember our old school had one with alot of speakers along the roof inside.

Got drunk and decided to 'test' it out Saturday night. Trying to sleep in it with all the seats in is not comfy!

Well, it made it. All 3751 miles. Not one single problem or breakdown!
Heres a few photos of it in various different places.

Camping in Amsterdam

View from the bus driving through the Alps

Camping in a carpark at the world champs in Italy

Camping in Luxembourg city centre

Camping in Freiburg, Germany. That day, the sat-nav took us to a nudist camp at first!

Amsterdam again

Me, trying to take a photo of myself driving on the Autobahn while everyone was asleep

At Lake Garda, Italy

Camping in a truck stop in France
