Is it correct to assume that if my 75 produces black smoke from low revs its likely to be a leaky pipe or intercooler and if it produces black smoke in high rev and load situations its probably a worn turbo?

Could be as mentioned or gunked up injectors and/or inlet it gets stinking on diesels can cause nightmares make sure you do a long run every thousand miles or so give it hell down the motorway 3.5k rpm keep it on load and go 100 miles or so like that blow the cobb Webs out,If it's the turbo you will soon know a clear day will turn to fog in seconds once the turbos faffed.

I haven't had a proper chance to check yet, but first impression is that it might have helped a bit.
No. I haven't had the time to check via the obd yet, I am very busy at the moment, but its a good idea.
