Finally made something of a start with this!!!
I have the intention of taking this to PoL along with my white mk3, so myself and a mate took a trip to Preston today to collect the car from storage after spending all winter laid up. After a very, very short journey it became clear the cars head gasket was absolutely blow to f**king pieces so we ended up towing it back to Liams house in Blackburn.

From there a very speedy strip down commenced, got the head off, rad out, water pump off and thermostat out in the space of two hours. Gonna do some shopping in the morning, collect a replacement cylinder head and brand new rad from my storage unit then start putting it back together in time for PoL. Some of the bodges on this car are absolutely appalling BTW, people slate the K-series and complain when the HG blows repeatedly but its absolutely no f**king surprise when you find the things people have done in order to fix the HG when it blows the first time.

Photos of these shameful bodges and more to follow shortly.

Aye, progress has been good, something wrong with the water pump though, the pulley tightens up when its fastened to the engine and I'm not sure why however we shall investigate in the morning. Once the cam belt is on just have to drop the mayo from the sump, fill with oil and coolant and should be ready to start!

Couple of pictures of my own to follow.

EDIT: My laptop has died to death and I cba trying to fix it so will post mah pictures tomorrow.

My plan when I bought it was to tidy up the bodywork and VVC it but lack of a unit/ garage/ driveway to park it on means that isn't going to happen any time soon. It has been sat in a locked compound since November until I decided I wanted to take it PoL along with my white Metro.
After PoL it will be homeless as it can't go back to the compound so unless I can convince my parents to let me keep it on there driveway I will have to insure it and run it alongside my Metro. I can justify this I suppose as I have a 7500 mile limit on the insurance on the Metro and I do about 15000 miles a year.

Don't let the pictures fool you BTW, it looks tidy at a glance but the passenger wing, bonnet and front bumper need replacing as there all foobarred. The arches need some loving too but there not totally rotten.

Same as mine buddy. Also, that guy with the front wing you warned of on Ebay emailed me back and said it's great condition and offered me to go view it... seems an idiot.

Idiot is an understatement. Their total f**king arseholes of the highest quality, I've been there mate and the car will be a cube of metal by now. It ain't a one man band either its quite a big company. I went to the address listed on ebay and its one of 3 sites, when I got there they sent me 2 miles up the road to the parts centre, then back to the office I started at, then to the scrap mill where the car was dumped on top of a 306, beaten to f**k.

Total gang of c**ts.

A smallish update,

With me liam and Bing having just invested in a shiny new hydraspaz pump (with vacuum) from Liquid Levers I set too today sorting the shagged radius arm bearings on mah Rundread.

The radius arm removed with relative ease

About the only part of the bearing that was still recognisable, the inside bearing came out in one piece and was still intact which was surprising

Rather scarily the shaft had started to wear its way into the arm, in an ideal world I'd have taken this to work and bored the journal out and fitted a sleeve to restore its diameter but I'm not at work this week so the alternative was to fill the worn area with a small amount of epoxy putty.

New bearings in

I used Quinton Hazell rebuild kits, about £25 a kit and they're top quality and contain all the bits you need including new seals which some of the cheaper kits don't include

Back on the car

The other side wasn't quite as bad but still in very poor condition, really goes to show the importance of greasing your radius arms, if you have wobbly radius arms then this is what to expect, no amount of grease will save them once they get to this state, and this is on a 54,000 mile car!

The outside bearing (left) had worn through the bearing cage leaving just the rollers, the inside was still fairly intact and was a bastard to knock out, thus me having to batter it to death with a chisel hence why its so chewed up

I must admit I'm impressed with the overall condition of this car, despite the blistering round the arches its not the rotten shitter I first thought is was, there is some filler in the arches but its not made of it, shining a torch around the inside of the arch all the original arch lip is still there so it wouldn't take much effort to make it look mint.

shortly after this picture was taken it started raining so I pack up for the time being, more to come tomorrow.

Very brief update. The Metro has been put on light duties while it waits to have its rear end sorted out, so Wolverine has stepped forward as main car in the mean time. To express its enthusiasm for the role the exhaust downpipe has crumbled at the flexi and its pissing engine oil due to the shit cam cover gaskets that come in the BGA head gasket kits. Managed to get the downpipe sorted today but it'll have to wait till next week before I can get hold of a Payen cam cover gasket.

Rotten and held together with exhaust putty

Old and new, the new pipe had an extra lambda hole that needed welding up

A picture I took a few months ago, the only picture I seem to have of my Tro's together

So it begins................

The GTa is in the early stages of its 1.8t conversion. First hurdle is getting the body in a respectable condition and now that I have found a cheap source of fuel for the heater (kerosene 72p a litre) I set to with the angle grinder and cup of death attachment to see what the rust situation was like.....

Panel seam along the sill is shot, the passenger jacking point has collapsed too but I didn't take a picture

Arch is fubarred

Got cutting, shockingly the piece of panel seam missing from the outer arch here wasn't even spot welded so fell out once it was cut

Gonna finish cutting and start thinking about making repair sections tomorrow, if it turns out good I might even do a 'how to' guide!

That scares me a little. Mines only on 27 thou and the arches arent far of how yours looked before you started chopping. Winters taking its toll and you can tell tyres not looking as fresh as they did a year ago. Maybe its time I got mine sorted before the rot really gets hold.
As said before bud, good work.

They rot from the inside out sadly so if its bubbling on the outside that's it they've had it, this is what it'll look like inside. Gotta cut the lot out and start afresh. Shit state of affairs I know but I suppose you can do a better job of sealing up it than Rover did so you should only have to do it once.

After much fettling I've managed to get a repair section that fits perfect, I'm quite impressed with the quality of the repair panels actually they can be made to fit like a glove if you have patience and a power file. Best of all I've used only ONE PANEL so far pictures..........

Now the outer panel fits I know how much room I have to repair the inner arch, I'll have to repair the inner arch in sections due to there being no repair panel available so I'm chopping up an outer panel to fit, should have this done tomorrow.

Looks like youre making a cracking job of the piecing the new arch in The problem with the repair panels is that they just lack definition so you slways have to skim the whole arch with filler to create sharp edges and then just lightly radius the sharp edges.

Me too! You should charge to do MP member arches, might make a few quid and help out members.
