Just to add to this thread,

rung flux up, they quoted me £1400 for the following mods:

momo steering wheel, roll bars, alloys, and better brakes.

Then rung again today, £2180 for a 1.8 vvc - with no other mods.

Im 19, with 1 year no claims. 5000 annual mileage.

- ill be waiting a little longer me thinks.

(although, i havent tried any others yet.)

Any J reg and under cars are now old enough to go on classic policies.
I've just renewed mine with Footman James, 7500 mile limit, engine conversion declared, 22 with 0 no claims and a claim pending (which makes it a fault claim pretty much) living in a BB postcode area, £750
Join the Metro Owners Club for £10 and you get further discounts too.

I'm late to start driving,, 27years old! Never needed car but I thought I'll have a dabble as I've always been into cars.. Anyroad.. I went on compare the ferret and all the insurance on telly and got quotes of 16k for my gti with the mods! Not paying that! So I got onto greame Sykes and they insured me for 1375! So I saved over 14k lol.. I'm not suggesting it's the cheapest place as it was the first decent quote I got so I took it, but I have no years driving and no claims. Go on there website, fill in the form, declare all your mods and theyll get back to you..

Get your parents to take out a policy on the car & go on as a named driver.

otherwise £1500-2k+

Check that with Cerbera..

The only way to find out which will be cheaper is to pick up the telephone (the thing with numbers on) and get a quote, every person/situation is different so until you try every one, you'll not know who is cheapest.

That's pretty good.
My Gti is insured for £569 but is third party fire and theft i believe. So you've got a good deal with it being fully comp.
Are you with Peter James?

Ok, said it the wrong way round..

Get your parents put on YOUR policy as named drivers - as long as their licence is clean your premium should come down.

Its a metro so if you crash it the car will more than likely be a write off - so no need to go anything other than 3rd party fire+theft.

Unless this is mute by not being fully comp - offer to pay a higher excess premium. It will cost you more if you prang it & make a claim, but the actual policy should be a little cheaper.

If you can afford to.. pay the policy off in 1 go! Save getting hit by the APR (15-30%) from the 'loan'.
Maybe get your folks to pay & then pay them back in instalments (interest free) - will cost the same but not in 1 go & each month will be cheaper than whatever insurers would charge for the same thing.

Finally as Andy says.... phone up the companies direct (not just direct line - ALL of them)!

Quotes from comparison sites can give you a rough guide as to cost.. but ALWAYS phone direct & give the company the details they need to process you properly - comparison sites don't always give all the needed details to a company so your comparison quote is more of a best guess than an actual quote. AFAIK if you go for a quote from a comparison site & then make a claim - if all the details that are required by that company were not given by the comparison site (cause they didn't ask you for those specific details) then you may find that not having provided that information when taking the policy means your policy is void.

I use comparison sites as a guide.. but have NEVER agreed to taking a policy through one. I phone the top ones directly & get quotes over the phone.

Go for a paperless policy to save trees & save the insurer billing you for those trees

You dont have a 111 tho do you... its a 1.4 8v. You need a modified car policy which at the age of 18 with 0 ncb you will be pissing in the wind im afraid. Im this day of age you need a bog standard sub 1.2 engined car to get reasonable insurance quotes. Dont even think about modifications.

Somebody told me that it brings it down massively if you put a provisional girl on as a named driver. Yesterday I did a quote on go compare with my sister as a named driver and it dropped from £4000 to £1300 I couldn't believe it

If i knew this i would have put my other half on my policy when she was learning, damn, missed out on saving cash.

Your quote sounds quite reasonable. How does it affect your policy if you have a male provisional on as a named driver?

Yea got a 1.1 to put back in before i get on the road. Not sure how a male named driver affects it I suppose the easiest way to check is to get a quote.

It was going to stay 1.4 until he saw my insurance quotes on the GTa, and a mate of mine owed me a few favours and he had one kicking around from back in the day when he had one

Bit of a hint as well, if you have a long-term partner or a wife etc, get on Admiral's multicar policy. I wrote off a 2005 Focus last year (but they gave me my NCB anyway) and have 3pts for speeding from 2009, so at just-20 with 3pts & a claim but 2yrs NCB the insurance companies were quoting me £3k+ for the 2002 Frog Auto 1.2l I was driving at the time. Me and the missus together (she is 25, new driver, passed her test September, no NCB) are paying under £3k for both of our cars now - she drives a Rover 25 1.1l and obviously I've got the 1.4 GSi.

Having a woman handy is always useful when it comes to the insurance loan sharks, it seems!

this thread has come up trumps yet again. just been quoted £1062 by a company through Graham Sykes for me to throw in my 1.4 16v engine and declare all mods. im 22 with 6points, 2claims and 1ncb. renewal with admiral would have been £550 if i stuck with the 1.1 for another year, no mods declared.

performance direct, greenlight and brentacre didnt want to know. tbh performance direct and brentacre sounded quite snotty down the phone... boo!

wish mine was as good as that! you got a clean license and loads ncb? i made my mistakes 4 years ago so should have 6 points and 1 claim fully expired by next year.. which should bring my insurance down nicely again
