Hi there
after just today completeing my headgasket change on the 1990 mg metro , she rev's perfectly , but will idle very roughly and below nomal rpm. I can put it down to the breather/vacumn hoses that are attatched to the carb.
can anyone take a pic of where their hoses to go and from , from the carb for me , as I think i might have misplaced one , and i just need to double check for sure.
thanks
Matt

Hi there
yeah its sort of use- If someone could check for me id be greatful. do you see the clutch bell housing breather on the left hand side , it runs a pipe into a y piece , and then one pipe goes to carb , the other to the other breather on the timing chain end . Well thats ok on my car , but the pipe next to that (further back) that comes ouit of the carb - where exactly does it go to> does it attatch onto a metal pipe down near the battery- if so , this is where ive attatched it , but its split at botjh ends and i think this is the one thats making the idle almost none exsistant.
HERES A LINK TO THE METRO- IVE CIRCLED THE PIPE IN QUESTION , THE ARROW DENOTES WHERE THE PIPE ENTERS THE CARB.

I have pics 1 3/4 Su on a metro engine, but I've got half of em blocked up. Might be helpful if someone wants to put some arrows on it. But basically, you should buy a new vacuum hose and a couple of spares cos they get hareline cracks in really easily and give you the symptoms that you are describing. Not having one at all is obviously, not going to help at all

There should be a pipe from the carb float chamber that goes to the anti run-on valve. If this isn't fitted, and the pipe to the carb isn't blocked off, the float chamber is open to atmospheric pressure all the time. This could account for the rough running.

The anti run-on valve is normally fitted to the bulkhead to the left of the servo (looking from the front of the car).

Hi there.
checked the anti run on valve. All pipes are connected and i didnt disconnect any whilst doing the head gasket. None of them run to the carb though from the anti-run on valve. I took the car for a drive today and it drives perfectly. It is idling but very very roughly and a bit coughy spluttery. Im really stumped as i checked all the other vacumn pipes and they all seem to be in the right place. The pipe i mentioned and circled in the above picture of the red mg metro , does anyone know where it is meant to be connected to. I have it running from the left hand side of the carb (looking at the front of car) to a little metal pipe down near the battery.

One should. It may be the one that you have connected to the metal pipe by the battery? I don't know what this metal pipe is for, but there should not be ANY pipes from the carb that just connect to an open ended tube.

does anyone have a picture of the way in which this pipe runs from the carb to the anti run-on valve.
Heres a picture below of the way mine is. The hose goes to a Y piece from the valve itself , then into the brake servo , whilst the other pipe goes onto the manifold nut.
There is no other holes or links for a pipe to run from the anti run on valve to the carb.

The Haynes manual has an underbonnet picture of the MG engine.

Saw that.
I have connected all the hoses up correctly.
We think rough idle down to bad blowout in exhaust manifold - Car drives perfect#
thanks for help

Having just seen your servo photo (I couldn't see it earlier as I was at work and most photos get blocked), I have just realised I was talking Sh*te . It has been a while since I have looked closely at a NA MG, and I had forgot how the anti run-on valve is connected up. Your's does look correct (It is different on the turbo). I am still not sure what your other pipe is for, but a leaking manifold does cause tick over problems and is a doddle to replace.

Thats no problem mate. The manifold was causing a bit of an unsteady idle before the head gasket went. I suppose the car has sat for nearly 2 months waiting for me to get my uni exams over and get it done. I think the manifold has rusted moreso in that period. All the pipes are properly connected , so its definitly not those as first thought. The other pipe is actually just an overflow pipe it turns out.
The car drives very well @ mo but is a bit noisy due to the manifold and a bit spluttery when reving back down again (like little tiny gunshots going off) , as well as the spluttery idle. I think a new manfifold will solve it.
Now onto my next problem , actually getting a new or good manifold.
does anyone know where these are obtainable??

It might be worth trying one of the mini forums. They trash MGs daily, and they might not use the MG exhaust manifold.

Im a member of a few. Its hard to get complete mg's any more. Its moreso engines , and even at that they always come without the lieks of the original mg manifold.
