Got some brembo front discs and pads (getting someone else to fit them ) and apparently they won't fit my 1990 metro Gti due to the width? I'd like to upgrade them from what's on there now (solid discs). I don't know much about them!
Any ideas?

They should fit with it being a GTi.

Who told you they wont fit, the one fitting them? Probably making it out to be a bigger job than it is to get more cash for the work

you are going to need mpi calipers and carriers, spi ones arent wide enough for the new discs. You can use a set of MGF front calipers which are the same as metro gti mpi calipers, probably pick a set of those of for very little money

OH.. I was certain that all GTi brakes were the same being all GTi's.

The spi run a solid disc and the mpi run a vented so the caliper has a larger opening to swallow the wider disc, the spi lattice wheels are same size as gta wheels and need a spacer with mgf/gti mpi discs, my spi solid discs worked great mind I'm still alive after all the brown noise moments.
