I detailed my dads 25 today as it was in a bit of a sorry state interior wise, and after i washed it i had time to have a play with the polishers to see what could be done with the paint (as its swirled and covered in random deep scratches (RDS)).

I did only manage to do the bonnet but now i know what it takes to correct the paint i should be able to do the rest soon.

Not very good are you as that right side of the bonnet looks much worse than the left side which is the original finish

No mate its paint correction. Mopping is a term im not fond of mainly because in most cases its when a bodyshop just chucks a polisher with some G3 around the paint usually doing more harm than good. Its really not as simple when correcting paint.

In perspective it took me about an hour and a half to get the bonnet like that

Thanks for the comments though

If you no what your doing with a polisher and g3 you should be able to bring the paintwork up to a very high gloss finish. It is not the case of just throwing a bit of g3 on and mopping.

To be fair I'd much rather use specific car polish (like what pandy has done) designed for certain levels of cut and refinement rather than the generic G3.

It's not about just getting a high level of gloss though, it's about removing the micro swirls too.

Like i said it is knowing what your doing g3 has been used in the refinishng trade for years.final finishing with a hand glaze will see to swirls. No need for all these fancy polishes. Just use a good quility wax to protect the paint

Theres plenty of need for 'fancy polishes' as people need them to correct the mistakes of others who dont know what they are doing. I bet you could walk in to 99% of bodyshops and see someone with a rotary just 'buffing' away not even looking at what they are doing...ok it might look shiney in daylight but shine a torch or put it in the sun and then inspect the finish.

Luckily not all people are as anal (dare i say it!) like me and others!

To be honest like you said you will nearly always see swirl marks in paint work out of most bodyshops. This is where they have rectified blemshies and like you said quickly ran the mop over it. They look good when finished but when washed a couple of times you see all the marks again. This is called drop out. What you need to do is rework the panel a couple of times to remove all the light flatting marks and swirls then finisu of with a good polish but dont use polish on fresh paint idealy should be left a couple of months
