Hi everyone in metro land
I have had standing for a while - and I have been getting her ready for an MOT - I have put new brakes on etc - touching up the small scab of rust here and there- nothing at all serious. Then I came to the drivers rear - and found this - triangular shaped hole.
Can someone give me a rough idea of how much this will cost to weld - bit worried as near fuel tank.

any help gratefully received.
Shaun

Not close enough to the tank to worry about that. At a guess by prices around here, if you cut it out and take it back to clean metal about 20 quid plated.

Id do it for free if you were closer

Hello ding,
many thanks for the reply - and thanks for offering to do it for me.

I thought that it would be more expensive as there is the complication of meeting the floor.

It's easy enough to do, I had to mine in the same place which was a lot bigger than that.

I passed you're way earlier too, to pick up my new banger. MK2 astra. If we thought of it I could have stopped by and done it

As the dingbat said really Shaun. Its the reinforced section of the inner wheel well that is quite common to rot out due to the multiple layers where moisture gets in. As long as the floor itself is sound without having the rot spread into it then you just need to cut out the side panels and make up new sections and weld in. No need to remove fuel tank, brake lines etc, just remove the entire rear trim and have a good inspection to see how far its gone, also good clean up of the inside of the wheel arch area.

Hello all,
as I don't know how to weld - I booked it in at the local garage that I use. Bill is fantastic at all things car related. So I took it over last Friday for the welding to be done, the brakes checked and an MOT.
I had swapped the disks and pads at the front for new, and changed the rear drums for new ones - it was a bit of a scary drive - with very little braking!
But I loved the eagerness of the engine... cant wait to get it back and sort a few odds and ends then use it for work..
I will let you know how I get on..
