Location: Isle of Wight | Hi,
Today I went to test drive my vvc conversion which is nearing completion and had a failure that could've been quite serious..
I drove forward slowly about 2 feet to leave the workshop, there was a grinding noise and I lost drive. I stopped straight away and when I looked the nearside wheel was buried up under the arch with the car leaning severely.
The inner CV had failed and pushed the triple bearing portion out of its housing. I'm guessing this caused excessive leverage because the bottom ball joint stub that locates in the hub had sheared! The ball joint was brand new and the only driving I've done on it was round a car park at about 20mph.
Although this is a total pain in the a$$ I was extremely lucky this happened when it did and not when I was at 60mph on an 'A' road.
If I source another driveshaft, is it ok to fit the new triple bearing section into the existing housing so I don't have to pop the inner shaft out and loose my brand new (expensive) gearbox oil?
Thanks |
