Think ill start a little journal seeings as iv already started playing with it

Today i stripped it out and checked all the floors....the result was ...they are in very good shape only a few little marks of surface rust and most of the soundproofin behind the dash is dry!

I swapped my half leathers from the metro gta to this one and gave it all a nice good clean

im going to wash it again and take some pics in teh day probably on wednesday but keep peeled as it'll get updatin as and when i do more to it

are you all jealous of my floor hehehe

Bit of an update:

Been fitting and cutting my Turbo arches tonight with the help of me dad....they both fit pretty much spot on (need to do some filling around the rubbin strip so it fits smooth)

wow those arches look mint, might get myself a set of them and meld them into the panel (as the panel needs a respray anyway!) shame the rear wheels will then be inset even more.... is there anyway to bring the rear wheels out a bit?

edit: also just realised, when you refit the bumper it'll look really awesome, as the turbo arches will be closer to the stock bumper, making it look ALOT neater! niiiiceee

yeh they are like teh same shape as the r100 bumper so chuffed with that

things needed a bit of trimmin like the bumper for instance but overall i recon they will look mint when done

im fitting spacers with the longer studs on mine to fill em out better but means i cant go as low as i want

you would be able to tbh, if you trimmed the real metal arch's back a bit, and basically tub them!

let me know where and how it goes when you fit spacers and longer studs, if you could tell me where you get em from etc when you do? cause id really like to do it to mine (if i do ill be modifying my arch's... with some metro turbo ones )

alright mate when you get the arches/skirts sprayed make sure they laquer them with a few coats as on my old car i had my arches blended into my skirts but where the front wheel stuck out passed the front arch by 20mm its flicked stones all over the arches and ive now got to get them repainted befor i can get the put back on me car.

no i didn't fit the front ones as the arch didn't need covering up. i repared my rear arches my self and put the covers on to cover up the fact that the paint didnt match and so was cheaper/easier for me to do that.

oh im with you mate

the arches arent going to be moulded onto the car as such they will be totally removable (bar teh tigerseal and a few screws) as im gonna blend just teh arch bottoms into the rear part of the gti skirts

as i like the defined lines between them not into having it impractical and all too smooth bet people thought they were gettin blended into teh bodywork now

Bit of an update as things have been moving smoothly

passed its MOT a few weeks ago with only a few "adviseries" Parker!

Bought a genuine Rover front panel to put in and chop the bent one out.
Bought some Qualifiers with Continentals on...used Tyre Black for the first time ever LOVE IT!
Painted my drums black
Painted my dial surround Tahiti
Put some Lockwood Silver dials in (along wiht 150 clocks)...but they need some milleage "correction" again Parker!
Cut the lips off my archs and filled smooth...they dont scrub at all with 4 people in the car (just got to attack the fronts next)
Refitted my Jetta splitter and it looks much better with the bigger wheels

more to come when i got some pennies...body work next

pics:

Full respect for this car now,

sometimes you hear plans made by people that never materialise, but you keep producin the goods!

even if you do it slowly

im well impressed with the splitter, and the wheels, and the spats

I want a front splitter

cheers i do tend to "want" things and they never happen but with this one pretty much doing to it what i want so

polish my car with a PC and ill do your brakes

i wasnt at all sure about the splitter with the 13's cos it made the wheels look really small but with the 14's it sets the front off and brings it lower

just waitin for my grille to be finished

it would take some going to burn it, like 5 minutes in the same spot with a heavy compound!
its a bit of a myth really, you have to ignore a lot of warning signs, such as smoke! and the pad falling to pieces -

only jokin tho, id practice on other cars first anyway, its just the porter cable set up is like 200 quid, i can get a rotary set up for like 80 with a couple of decent pads - and all the pro's use rotaries anyway, so why not bite the bullet and learn to use the thing. its just the PC is a bit more user freindly.

once ive done a couple of cars i will be glad to give it a go, the main skill to learn is using it on plastic bumpers because they dont dicipate heat like metal panels, so u have to be patient

Had a good day working on the car today trying to get it ready for MGM

Dad finished welding the drivers floor today
Colour coded the rubbing strip on the wing
Found out why the car was rattling (MGF droplinks were touchin the c brackets)
Fitted droop stops
Test fitted Turbo arches to see what they look like with 14's.....definately gonna get them finished!!
Gonna wash it in a bit and get the bonnet and wing matching how clean the rest of the car it

little update (not much as i always put it in the gallery or general anyway )

sold my Astra splitter as i wanted something abit slimmer (thinking that a Laguna one was slimmer uh uhhhhh)

planning to take it off the road before december when insurance policy finishes so i can change the front panel, rear arches, and more importantly ENGINE

so ill be updating this alot when i take it off the road

see my other journal for what happened to the BRG GTa

another little update

As im wanting to refurb my wheels in a light anthracite i thought that the chrome strips wouldnt look that good so stuck some black leccy tape over them to see what they looked like impressed to say the least....may even leave the tape on haha

Plans for the next few months are hopefully get my 16v conversion done as insurance is up soon so may aswell do it now

Pretty pleased with it atm so i dont see any need for any other exterior mods....bar ZS exhaust trim and colour coded front mud flaps!

appologies at the height....its never normally that high just needed it pumping up abit for when i go on hols

Cheers for the comments guys much appreciated!!

Yes its a Nurburgring sticker....i went there and i drove round the track in the Sleeper MK1 so i think i qualify for being able to have a sticker

Tandy you dont need to remove the chrome strips just put the tape over the top its still holding strong after a wash and not so good weather

Trying to upload pics of my spot lights but the laptop is being sloooooooowwwww.....they are VERY bright, and also very hot melted my surrounds with the eyebrows on so had to cut the eyebrow off

Still cant decide what engine to put in it but have a few months to decide.....its not getting tracked so something ncie and roadworthy i think

Pics:

before the eyebrows got melted off

They will be colour coded....or my dad found some chrome surrounds today that just need te middles machining out as they are abit chunkier

one problem is where they sit....the one of the passenger side sits about an INCH further back than the drivers one.....shows how bent the front panel is

The only reason i was thinking of the metal surrounds is that they wont get as melted as the plastic items lol but i spose i wont have them on much at all so

I think it looks well good mate.
Personally though, as for the colour of the trim, I'd go with satin black (continue the theme) or body colour.
Chrome might take you into chav teritory

Picked up (well had to take them off the car) my Black Diamond GTi brake set up the other day from Jon....must Say James, the car looks awesome and those rear arches are HUGE!

Painted the calipers with that metallic black high temp paint (utter Sh*t! but it was freezin cold) then fitted them atm i havnt noticed a difference but havnt really driven the car yet

This the outcome when you have no other choice but to take a trip up Jon's mud track

Crap painted calipers:

Car hasnt been this high in months lol:

also found my Arb brackets so put my rear arb back on made a difference

need to decompress the passenger side tomorrow as the knuckle joint on the rear isnt sitting where it should be

Oh how plans change

Was really looking forward to Sunday taking a trip up to Sacha's to get my 1600 fitted.....but no that just cant happen can it

Washed the car today and noticed the sidewalls on a few of my tyres are starting to crack (dont want ANOTHER blow out ) so engine has to wait till the new year

Propper gutted about it but i cant run around on these tyres for much, if any longer and i cant be running on mpi's for that long either - although i may have no choice

Will update when new stuff happens

Tahiti GTa - 29/11/2007 9:07 PM Oh how plans change Was really looking forward to Sunday taking a trip up to Sacha's to get my 1600 fitted.....but no that just cant happen can it Washed the car today and noticed the sidewalls on a few of my tyres are starting to crack (dont want ANOTHER blow out ) so engine has to wait till the new year Propper gutted about it but i cant run around on these tyres for much, if any longer and i cant be running on mpi's for that long either - although i may have no choice Will update when new stuff happens

Poor effort mate, the tyres are only £174 plus about £40 for fitting

Balls to new ones, just roll on them, man up

Why are your sidewalls being eaten is a more important point.

Theres no point fitting new tyres if your arch's are catching and eating your sidewalls, fix that before you fit new tyres.

Its quite possible that I got hold of the last 2 Toyo T1R ever made!
I was the last person on here to aquire any... back in October

Thats unlucky mate
Have you tried just goin to a local tyre supplier and stumping up that bit extra in cash.
Ive always bought my rubber from Pemberton Tyres (theyre part of the 'first stop' group) they always sorted me out propper,
AND they matched the price on MyTyres
http://www.pembertontyres.co.uk/content.html

I can always fone them to get them in stock for ya, bit of a trek, but theyve never let me down!

Hope things pick up for ya pal!

Everyplace that "could" get the tyres had to order them in from Toyo direct.....Toyo are the ones who dont have them in stock. they were expecting a delivery but it got put back till after xmas.

Will see wat happens next year lol

haha i gave it some after they were put on the car, seemed abit cold and hard at the time but are awesome now

having new tyres is ace feels safe compared to those horrid Continentals

asked at the tyre fitters if i could keep one or two of the old tyres but ALL off them had massive cracks on sidewalls on both sides

they are also the only clean bit of the car lol the rest is a sort of grey-matte-blue colour

just get the powdercoaters to do all the bits you want
then get some laquer and when you get the bits back rub back the parts you want to the aluminium and then seal it with the laquer

Powdercoaters i know dont just linish the fins, they can diamond grind them to make em rediculously awesome! and shiny!

Im going to set my ghetto shotblaster up and do my 16v cam-cover, the one on the car is a sorry state!

yeah I was going to say the powedercoater wont linish the fins, if you want to then use very fine wet and dry on a flat sanding bock and use oil not water, you will have to keep this surface clean or it will erode, you might be able to clear coat it but I would not suggest it.

Best bet is to leave it all one color, my old cam cover and inlet were all one color powdercoat and it is a very tough and goof looking finish, you can see the motled surface of the VVC inlet but when you touch it its as smooth as glass.

Fitted my 1.6 off Ali on saturday, went quite well without an engine crane, hurts abit though!

cam cover and inlet need painting but i didnt see the point putting the plastic inlet on to change it later on and have to do the cooling again

pics......

cleanish gearbox

the colour coded shelter

and the final product, dont look at the "hose pipe" breather, its all i had at the time

Well no, its fair comment, and something Adam informed me of because I noticed it too.
(coming on cam?)
At around 4krpm the 16v lump seems to really go for it much more than an 8v unit, which would just carry on at constant rate of accelleration.
The 16v hits the sweet spot at 4k and reminds you theres 40 extra gee-gees under the bonnet, but up untill then, I couldnt tell much difference.
Barring a small lift in torque (I can climb hills in 5th previously only do-able in 4th) and a deeper exhaust note

is it not also something to do with the flywheel? My old V6 calibra came to life at high revs due to the heavy flywheel and iirc the metro version isnt exactly light.

As far as Im aware flywheel inertia does play a part in torque delivery, thats why you hear about cars with lightened flywheels that dont do well uphill but accelerate on the flats like a demon.
But Im not sure the weight difference between an 8v and a 16v is enough to cause any REAL performance gain.

I'll put my (already poor) reputation on the line and say its the 2nd cam doing the work

Doesnt one cam open/close the inlet side...and the other open/closes the exhaust side??? Making your theory rubbish as they work together

I do agree though. They do come alive after 4k rpm

I should have rephrased that, not the cam doing the work, rather, making the difference as it were.

Why you say that?

My bro did his with Halfords rattle can (normal body spray) and its been alright for 6 months or so...and a lot of miles.

Iv done mine with hammerite and its also been find for about 8 months or so. Goes a bit soft after a long run...but its fine

Why would they sell engine laquer if paint worked fine?
I obviously want it to stay reet for the lad, but just dont see it lasting.
Ive had VHT on an engine before now and its burned and flaked away leaving a trail of blue smoke behind you.
And if youre like me, convinces you that your engine is on fire

Iv tried VHT on an exhaust...and its coming off. But that gets upto around 500c mark.

The engine cover only reaches about 100c*. Some of them 'engine laquers' arent as good as they claim anyway.

*dont quote me...but im sure iv read it somewhere

Paint job dont look bad on the cover.. just remember to keep your brolley away if and when ya spray the vvc cover.

What does it actually say on the stainless? Hard to see in the picture

Jeckulz, the rocker cover rarely gets hot enough to need engine laquer, engine laquer is for what it says its for, engine heads and whatnot (as it will always be hotter near teh exh ports, but ivefound hammerite seems to work fine for that anyway!)

Most VHT paint ive used has been Sh*te, flakes off or just comes off as soon as you drive it, where as hammerited blocks and what not seem to last, and body paint sprayed rocker covers last fine, my 8v is still solid paint even after a year and a half.

What rear valance?

Your better off just cleaning and hammeriting the ARB's yourself as I had mine powder coated and it just flaked off unless you can garentee that the company doing it chemical strips the ARB's and shotblasts them before coating them I wouldn't bother, save your pennies

oh, btw, I know we have had some rain but not enough to get your body board out mate

Just read this from start to finish, awesome thread. Im starting to get a taste for the K-series now

Whats the plan with the turbo arches, they still going to be fitted?
Are they just turbo arches from a MG metro cut and fettled with, or is it a "turbo bodykit"?

Andy must admit that this is one of my prefered cars at metropower...looks so sober and nicely detailed...great job really, congrats.

One question as I'm considering fitting ZR seats on mine what exactly did you do to fit them on yours ? Will the rears fit aswell or is it a no way job !!!

Cheers,

Alex

I thought full new ZR seat was fitted...or am I getting it wrong ?

Front seat the foam and material goes onto the tro metal bottom bit.

Rear seat from a ZR won't fit unless you modify the bases, even then it's probably too big so best bit is to get the material off the sponge and have it trimmed onto a Metro rear bench imo

What Gerrard said Alex

The front take 30 minutes to fit, albeit ive noticed they are abit higher when the back is more upright than GTi seats, but i still much prefer them

Follow the guide Gerrard did for the Rover coupe interior and its spot on

Backs however are a different story, as far as i can tell they need a propper retrim onto a metro bench

If you are getting the ZR seats and want matching doorcards, get the seats with the black centre's as you can get the centre material still so can match the doorcards with the seats perfectly, unlike the flecked ones like mine - material all got burnt in a fire

The seats ARE very comfy indeed.

Wouldnt advise them if youre of a bigger frame as the side bolsters REALLY grab your pelvis and waist.
So if youre a bit wider, stick to 200 coupe/GTI thrones.

Still like them though

Well i 'might' do the arches, still need to fit my front panel, need new front end panels and a general tidy up of the bodywork

I want to refurb the rear subframe/suspension as there's a knock and the Rosejoint droplinks squeek constantly But i doubt ill get any of that done

Update

Finally got it in the garage yesterday so i could start work

I'm going to do the car one half at a time ie concentrate on the rear end first and then sort the front after, which means i can do it how i want without having too many jobs on the go at once

Stripped the bumper, sideskirts and rear spats off to reveal a lovely sight (the arches were "repaired" mid 2007 and were meant to be a temporary measure to get it looking presentable) im now paying the price for that

Little bit of rot on the sill and subsequently a nice hole in the floor i missed before

I then moved onto to taking the exhaust off - its meant to be stainless steel, will need some work bringing it back to life thats for sure

You can see where its been taking a bashing over the bumps

Which left me with the following pretty sight. theres not alot left to do, in short ive just got to take the tank off and drop the subframe off and can do the repairs properly

Not too bad around where the exhaust sits

Maybe its not so good....i knew the valance was shot so it wasnt a complete shock

This little spot is on the other side of the car just behind the fuel tank, should be easily sortable i hope

And im left with this to continue with tomorrow

At least the fronts and mojority of the floor pan is still going strong....

Little bit more done tonight

Managed to take the subframe off and strip that down ready for refurbing, handbrake was being a pain in the arse so i cut it off in the end

Components that need a little freshening up/replacing

And would you believe this knuckle was only 5 months old

Which left me with a nearly bare floor to start work on, and plenty more rust to tackle!!

Above the subframe arm

Nice and tricky

And more bad results of the crap repair on the arches

Should be an easy fix though

Which left it floating and naked

Think i might change the wheel colour to white, im not happy with the result of the Gun Metal and i chipped one with the jack handle today!

Ill get the tank off tomorrow and sort out some of the piping ready for starting on the floors

Tyres off is the only way to make it last and do your work justice.
You could get all 4 powdercoated for 100 though... might be worth the dosh.
If the servo is tatty, just take it out and paint it propperly.
Poinless spendin cash on stuff that aint neccesary.
Then again, if theyre cheap enough for a rover part... why not eh?

If you can afford the time, take EVERYTHING out and off the angine and bay.
Paint em all up in silver, blue and black... will look f**king hot mate.
In particular, the stuff that's low down like the gear box and visable workings, engine block etc.
I'll be watching this like a hawk dude.
If any car on here deserves this kind of overhaul, its yours.
Its obviously been well looked after judging by the minimal rust levels.

Are you gonna seal up the subframes?

Poweder coating costs are generally down to the prep required.
Do as much as you can yourself so that when they get it for blasting, it wont take them as long, and you save some pennies.

Get it done in silver so it looks like lovely new metal

Tank has been dropped so the rear floor is 95% ready for work to start

Started bringing the exhaust back to life, pain in the arse but its working

Got two full days on it on Friday and Saturday so should hopefully have some decent progress made

Yep that was the build date, a mate bought it brand new for his GTi, and then I had it off him when he ended up with a bent front end killing the car. So it's not done too bad really for its age

If youve got a few quid lieiong about mate go on ebay and buy a small metal polishing kit with mops and things for your drill, the once two hour polishing job will not take 30 mins

Looking good and love the attention to detail

P.S. i want your wheels :-(

Wow i havnt done a fat lot for nearly a month

But now i have the Clio im able to go get parts etc, and tbh i REALLY want the tro back

What ive done in the month is:

Clean, rust repair and underseal the fuel tank
Done one patch of welding inside the drivers rear arch
Got the subframe powdercoated - they blew holes in it and powdercoated it without telling me so i had to cut it out and weld + paint
Painted the suspension components
Stripped the radius arms down painted them, and am in the process of cleaning up all the brackets and painting them
New bearings have been bought and will be fitted tomorrow
New rear knuckles (at the lovely price of 50 a pair - second time in a year ive had to buy these)

Not alot really, just been cleaning and painting bits

Next on the list is strip the arbs and paint them/powdercoat....wait for Royal Mail to find my clamp Polybushes from MOAM and get that all built back up....also need to find my mgf droplinks

Then get all the brake components, new everything basically and get them built up on the arms and get the subframe ready to be bolted back up

Then its just a case of welding and undersealing the shite out of it

Have done abit more over the last week of two of the rebuild as i want it back big time!

Special Goodridge hoses:

Polybushes and the engine details:

And the Goodridge hoses against the engine....pretty decent match i recon:

Ill update later with more pics (of rear subframe etc) but my computer is crap and the USB messes up when i try to move files over!

Them hoses pimp dude, arent metro gooridge hoses like 80 for just fronts? They look awesome either way especially against that engine! One thing i dont like though.. new wheel choice! loved the stealthy look they would of had in anthracite

They were 65 with the orange

These wheels will get changed if i can find something more to my taste, but prob stay anthracite for abit, or might put them on the silver one and get those ones done white

After:

Should hopefully have the engine back in tomorrow, as got the Goodridge hoses on the front tonight, then can sort out the routing of the loom

Arent you making the welding difficult for yourself by cutting there?
Or have I missed the jist of DIY welding?

Engine looks nice mate.

Yeah its gonna be a twat to sand and fill but i didnt want to go into the flat part of the panel as itll warp it, plus the bodyshop will eventually be sorting it out

Hopefully is will be yeah

I thought it only warps if you weld to much in one go?
From what this thieving **** once told me, all you gotta do is just make lots of lil tack welds, not letting it get hot and making sure you space them well enough to prevent buckling?
He could be lying.

...Wouldnt suprise me (- Saucer of milk to Jeckulz's table)

if you set the welder up right and just do short bursts you'll be fine, id rather fully weld the panel rather than just tack it in certain places, thats for sure.

Bout time that rusty arch came off just need to cut out all of the rotten inner arch too so it doesn't come back into the new archs.

Thats the same way I do most of my archs if they are not too badly infected, as long as you know what you doing with the welder you shouldn't have a problem, like you say little tacks to hold the arch in place and then once it is where you want it you can fill in between the welds bit at a time so the panesl doen't get too hot and distort.

Me too, got to take one back tomorrow morning as the powdercoat is abit light in the corners on one wheel and its pretty noticeable

Its going to be on all 4s again tomorrow and hopefully will be running and have an arch

Nearly a year on and ive not done much to it, however i shall be taking it off the road again over winter if we build the garage in time and it will be off the road again for however long it takes this time, full strip down to get the shell as good as i can but will detail it more when it happens.

Until then i shall be mainly sorting the entertainment out now i have my replacement SPL Dynamics amp, need to finish my tweeter housings and rewire the car.

Few pics of how its looking now and abit of soundproofing i did to it (didnt do the main floors as these will need work later on)

Got some GTi skirt to get painted, it still needs new front end panels, door repairing, bumpers, and arches (only did the one - poorly)

Its not very positive bodywork wise, and i still cant decide which way to go with the exterior but we will see what comes about

Its good mate, blocked a hell of a lot of exhaust noise out in the boot area and door are much better now - will probably redo it again later incl the roof.

cars looking really good mate. thought thos wheels in white looked well good, but now in the gun grey kinda colour i like even more, goes really well with that colour. sound deadening looks good, bet its quite a bit quieter now. i was thinking of doing that before i went for the stripped out approach! nice work

Fitted my VVC exh cams last night with the MUCH needed help of mr Parker.

Can definately feel a difference but need to get a new dizzy drive and fit it in the correct position as we had to 'modify' the distributor

Gave it a machine polish yesterday so its looking bling (the parts that arent rusty) but need to tidy up a few areas before Sunday

Its too loud aswell, im getting old or boring so might fit my GTi exhaust

The yearly pre-MGM clean happened this week including paint correction, Dodo Juice protection, plus interior and engine bay detail.

I also got my centre caps back from the powdercoaters and added my Rover centre badges but they are just shy of fitting - i presume there is too much paint on them so they need sanding down a touch on the edges.

The car had abit of a nosedive going on so i have adjusted the suspension to correct this - bumpstops needed attention but ill probably pump it back up after MGM

Been on the rollers today and am very impressed with the results.

127bhp at the fly, 93bhp at the wheels, and 122lb torque, figures taken from 3 consecutive runs - all saying the same thing (the first said 126bhp at fly and 90bhp at wheels - so 4 runs in total)

Very impressed with Steve and the guys at Aldon Automotive in Brierly Hill, will be back there after i decide whats happening with the engine.

Yeah suprised how smooth the lines are considering its a standard ECU.

Mods are:

Decat with GTi cat back
VVC exhaust cams
VVC inlet
52mm throttle body
ZR160 ITG panel filter

Very impressive sir, same torque levels as 1800 and more bhp

I was thinking on way home tonight do drop the pick-up on the rollers as it goes quite well for an SPi 16v

Your project is, in fact, stunnig! My congratulations, with simples things you have made a simple nice car! Sometimes, little modifications are enough, your case is an example of that.

Had to check something for Rob and swap my ITG filter into the ZR so took a quick picture of him seeing daylight, is still mighty clean, no signs of damp as he smells fresh as a daisy inside, with just a few marks on the paint from the cover.

Got a good deal on the ZR and TF insurance today so might be able to get him back out for the summer depending on how much i get raped by insurance for him!

How do you know what is the correct position for the rotor arm? I saw this image...

Which one do I use?

Id hazard a guess that it would be the second image (VVC cam) but engines really aren't my forte I'm afraid.

I did have trouble with the positioning of the drive peg in mine and i fitted a new one in a slightly different position as it didnt seem to run correctly in the first position, but even then when we tweaked it with the second peg the ignition timing was out so i had to modify my distributor so that it idles smoothly.

I think it's the left image - the right one is for a VVC head converted to solid cam using Piper blanking kit as the dizzy mounts are offset.

I should have one somewhere mate will have a look, its not as pretty at the minute. Its a rover 400 ecu as far as i am aware.

Fitted the Scorpion exhaust back on earlier but i need a new rear rubber (again) as its sitting way too high, sounds lovely though!

Just the brakes to sort and some fresh oil and its ready to come out on Sunday

Another boring update without pics.

I have started de-modifying the car as i made some stupid decisions before, its amazing what you notice when its not a daily driver

*Removed my Momo pedal covers because they were stupid.
*Replaced my shortened gear stick with a standard setup so now i even have a gaiter on it (even if it is rubber) which is a first in about 2 years! Noticeably stupid mod.
*Found my blue side skirt end caps as the grey looks stupid.

Still need to fit a new master cylinder which will hopefully sort the brakes out, i need to adjust my handbrake, sort out why the heat shield is rattling on the decat, get my ITG filter out of the ZR and refit that, and i really need to sort the rot out on the arch and some some other bodywork concerns.

The joy

Hello mate !
how much did you lower your car by and how did you do it ?
did you do it by cutting that rods in the hydrolastic unit shorter ?

Hi mate

Yes I removed 10mm off the rods all round and also removed the spacers so thats another 3-5mm, i wouldnt remove the spacers though especially the front as they help keep the car level with the varying weights.

I adjusted my handbrake earlier and now its rock solid on 3 clicks, appears that the drivers spring on the cable wasnt freeing up enough and the adjuster was big time loose but it does still creak and doesnt free off quite enough so i will probably replace it come MOT time.

Also sorted the heat shield rattle as it was sitting on the U clamp of the de-cat so as a temporary measure i have slide some rubber tubing over that until i can get a new heat shield.

Swapped the air filters back over from the ZR so i have the ITG in the GTa now, and removed some fluid as i had pumped it up for some reason prior to taking it off the road, now its too low at the back so ill have to address that tomorrow.

LOVE having him back

ok thanks for that mate I am asking because i've got the same wheels and your car seats just perfect, does it fit nicely on the back and it doesn't rub on the radius arm ? or did you have to modify it at all ?

Cant go wrong with Qualifiers mate

I have no clearance issues but thats because i dont have any arch lips they are completely smooth inside (its currently sat way too low on the back with only about 1-2cm of the tyre visible from the arch - never go out after adjusting your suspension without taking it for a quick ride after ) and you dont have the problem with radius arm clearance with 14's provided you fit the correct size tyre

Sorry mate i didnt see your post. To answer it if they are original you may get away with just rolling the left and right sides of the arch (if look straight on) as they dont tend to catch on the top.

The car is due its MOT middle of July so i am doing bits and bobs to it to make sure it passes.

*Have a new master cylinder to fit to hopefully bring the brakes up to what they should be.
*Have removed the fogs in the rear bumper as they were rusted solid inside and have ordered a new one and cleaned up my old reflector that sits in the LH side aperture.
*Have given the passengers rear arch abit of a tap today and as i expected its fairly rotten so the plan is to weld a new one is as soon as i can.
*Fitted a new bonnet catch thanks to Turley and adjusted the rubbers so now it doesnt wobble on the car

Seriously tempted to get my white wheels back

Captain Bodge came out this week and i 'fixed' the drivers arch which was/is shot. Its only a temporary fix (i said that back in 2007 when i last did it) but i will be doing it properly over winter. Also repainted my petrol cap as it had reacted last time so thats another thing off the list, might give the mirrors a lick of paint if i get time

Will be getting a good detail either Friday or Saturday ready for MGM as it has some light marks from the cover and it just generally needs lifting as its gained a few swirl marks.

Also fitted the new master cylinder but i need to re-bleed the system as its too soft, took out my 2nd fog light and replaced it with the original blank and cleaned up my old fog (bought a new one but its for the LH side so if anyone wants a brand new one )

Its getting there!

Ive used Menzerna polishes with Chemical Guys Hex Logic pads on my G220 and they work well.

Used RD85 3.02 with a finishing pad to bring it up to that standard

Yesterday was a special day, 5 years ago i drove down to Luton and saw my baby for the first time

Thought i better give him a wash as i hadn't done so since before the Somerset meet

I went over to a mates house and we took the car out to get some photos but as soon as we got there the battery on his stand-alone flash thingy died so its really under-exposed but still love the pic (only decent one that turned out ok)

The time has come for me to drag this up from the depths of MP

With PoL only being a few months away I thought it time I started getting it ready for the road as I want to tax it a month early and get it on the road for the start of April

Having taken the cover off today and had a quick look over it I have a bit of work to do. The one problem I had after starting the car was that my alternator started smoking, smelling like it was in fire, followed by what sounded like electrical 'popping' and the belt was screaming its bottom off, but I guess that is due to no use over the last 3 months and this is the first time I have attempted to start it since taking it off the road. So that will be replaced but I am going to look into a Mems3 conversion as I don't like the fact that I have had to 'modify' the distributor position so that it runs properly.

Foolishly I left the handbrake on the whole time so that is on the brink, but it needs replacing anyway as it has worn by the subframe/exhaust section and the rear arms in the drums had been sticking previously. The brakes are stiff again due to lack of use but a fresh set of pads and shoes should hopefully sort that if I can't clean and free it all up.

The intior is showing signs of mould appearing too so that will need a good clean out, and surprisingly my wheels have marked and have lots of light spots have appeared on them so looks like I'll be getting them re-powdercoated again.

And lastly, the cover has marked the paint all over but having tried one of my new Auto Finesse products, it seems to come off with ease so thats no set-back really.

I bought a NOS grille last week but I'm half tempted to leave it off as it'll be the best panel on the car then

The alternator has probably seized so was just the belt burning I would think.

Car covers are evil... Rub the paint on every edge that protruded and doesn't allow the car to breathe either hense the mould. Prob best to just wash a car and leave it be over winter tbf. Make sure its rust proofed and rot free prior to leaving it stand and it should be fine over the winter. If there is rust and rot it will be worse after the winter.

It's only really light marking as the cleanser I used literally cleanses the paint so it's not too bad, and the mould has only happened this year, last year it was perfect as I removed it every couple of weeks and let it our out, my own fault really

Braved the cold for all of 5 minutes earlier to do a few cosmetic changes.

Firstly I was getting bored of the blue dash surround and my Trophy wheel is starting to look tired, so I replaced the dash surround with the standard item and fitted the TF wheel I recently took off the TF. Will look at getting a Rover airbag for it as well as the gubbings I need to wire the airbag in. I also need to source a new set of vertical temp/fuel gauges so that I can get a new set of silver Lockwood dial covers and refit my round dial cover I had on before.

TF wheel and standard dash surround by Pandy100, on Flickr

I also test fitted my NOS grille. Now I know why I never changed it before, because the front end is still as twisted as ever and a standard grille (ie not f**ked) doesn't fit correctly. As my current one is missing the centre mounts I can get away with it but with the new one having these mounts I get this sort of problem

New grille by Pandy100, on Flickr

But here it is fitted to the car, not sure whether to remove the slats and mesh it, as well as the bumper, but I'll decide later on.

New grille in position by Pandy100, on Flickr

Next job on the list is replace the alternator as I have found a spare and see if it runs ok, as well as a service and fluid change, clean the front seats and remove the rears, and get some sort of stereo in it as it currently has nothing.

I'm starting to add to my repair panel collection too as I have bought an inner rear valance repair panel, on the look out for an outer valance and then see if I can pick up some cheap sills later on

Coming on very nicely Andy. Absolutely adore this car... beautiful!

Interested to see how it looks with the standard black grille bits from a distance too... I preferred mine like that than with the mesh

Bring it on

Well it runs fine, needs an alternator fitting and a service but at least it starts on the key still Rear brakes and handbrake need replacing/looking at as they are binding due to sitting so long.

It will be taxed for the start of April so I'll have it on the road for at least a month, depending if I can get decent insurance quotes when it runs out the end of April.

The LH side wheels are damaged too, I think chemically, so I'm in two minds whether to get them down to City Powder Coaters and get them redone.

Fingers crossed the ZR has stopped playing up so I can concentrate on this now

Did a bit of work to it over the weekend, after I'd realised there are only a few weeks til PoL

Fitted a new alternator and belt (cheap from Best of British if anyone is after one)
Fitted a new battery negative to slam panel earth lead as mine had broken off previously
Realigned the O/S front wing so that it no longer sits on the a pillar and the bonnet shut lines are slightly better
Fitted my NOS front grille which involved realigning the whole front end, really need to organise when I can fit the new front panel

Next on the list is the rear handbrake mech in the drums as the O/S sticks terrible, and see if I can reuse the handbrake else I'll get a new one. Then I need to give it some fresh oil, coolant, and give the ignition components a look over, hopefully the fresh oil will get rid of the awful tapping I'm getting but I was expecting that considering its stood for 5 months.

Then I need to repair the O/S front wing where it has rusted on the lip and also the sill on the same side as that has some corrosion on, then start work on the interior and paint, oh and get my wheels repainted.

Feck

They have been off for ages but still have them in the garage. If I can straighten them and repaint them I'll put them back on at some point

there's nothing wrong with 13's! although your car looks abit silly with them on for some reason. i think its the silver, or the fact they're flat. if you do manage to find a set of tahiti wings then let me know, i need a n/s one!

looking forward to seeing this at pol, if i manage to get mine looking anywhere near as shiny as yours il be a happy man

I damaged the paint on the car when I took mine off too which is why I want to get them back on when I ever sort the paint out

Had a tinker with the rear brakes just and it definitely needs a new handbrake cable. The O/S rear spring is constantly compressed so theoretically it never releases the handbrake on that side fully.

Had my first drive in 5 months just, fallen straight back in love

Fitted the new handbrake so it now releases and holds correctly, although the brakes themselves need looking at as it's appalling ATM.

Wheels are on and I flipping love 'um Do have something else in the pipeline for the wheels but not sure on it yet.

Cheers guys.

Ad it wasn't too bad, I did it without taking anything off the car, bar remove the seats to gain access to that end of the cable. Although mine has resorted to doing what it always does and compresses more on one side

Anytime David, with regards to arches it will get some eventually, it's not going anywhere just waiting to buy a house with a garage really lol

Another year, another few hundred miles for the GTa.

I'm hoping to get some tax tomorrow so I can start using him again, making sure everything still works as it should etc.

I picked up a pair of doors off another tahiti GTa a few weeks back so will look to fit those before PoL if I can, and I am also hoping to do a deal with MetroMuppet for his tahiti GTi skirts which would be a nice touch.

I had a random electrical problem this weekend. I have been starting the car every week to make sure it's all ok but this weekend it wouldn't turn over, no clicking to signal that the battery is dead, just nothing - so I put the battery on charge as it was reading low on the volt meter but still nothing. Came back to it today and give a few electrical components a wiggle and it started Will have to keep an eye on that one I think.

I will hopefully get to detail it this week whilst I'm off work, god knows it needs it

Trying to convince myself that I need to hoard a set of those genuine rear quarter panels atm too!

Oh how I wish I still had my perfect floors on the first page of this journal!

Work has started to get the GTa ready for TroFest in September as my MoT ran out in July, and it needs the brakes sorting and the rot repairing at the very least. I'm also in the process of fitting TF bottom ball joints as one was an advisory on last years MoT, but I think I could do with some TF steering arms now to go with the ball joints and the red band rack.

Today I removed the passenger front seat rear mount and cut the rot out of the floor including half of the strength channel (the one tht runs from the middle of the car to the sill). I need to pick up some metal this week and work on the panel to weld in place. I've also got a pair of inner sills on their way to utilise as I want to take a few cm out above where the floor is rotten as I can see signs of rust up there, even though the panel hasn't gone yet.

The next item will be the passenger front jacking point as that is well and truly rotten. The drivers inner sill has also gone so that will be the following item to be tackled.

Here is a little glimpse of what I have uncovered so far, plenty to keep me busy!

Firstly the passenger jacking point is very rotten. The plan is to cut it out and leave it out, I never use them as I prefer the safety of the subframes so they are pointless.

Then there is the drivers inner sill in the front footwell. Again, pretty damn rotten and I will need to remove a fair amount of this sill to find clean metal, and more than likely the external sill as well.

This is the part I am working on at the minute, rotten right under the seat mount and through the support channel.

Realising I need to do the job correctly or face doing it again in a few years I picked up a spot weld drill and removed the seat mount

And then after removing the underseal and revealing where the rot is, I cut a section out (the reason its triangular is that I wanted to keep as much of the good metal in the car as possible)

And that is as far as I have got with it. I am waiting on a pair of inner sills, and will be removing some more metal in the sill section around the above seat mount rot this week with the intention of getting it all refreshed and patched up by the weekend - to move onto the next part!

I also had a cat climb up through the hole the other day and my neighbour said it was going mental running around inside the car

Have your jacking points been welded in the past Andy?

That reminds me of the rot on the purple one, R reg's are awful for rust.

This proves it, if its an R reg, has a sunroof and lives outside for most of its life its going to need welding lol.

Only plated over the top before mate, but even the welds on most of that plate are broken due to the rust underneath. It's spread a little onto the classic rail too!

Yep. I'll definitely be routing the sunroof drains externally through the sills.

My Ascot has next to no rust. To try and keep it that way I have taken the heatgun to all the soundproofing on the floor pans as it forms a sandwich for he damp to eat away the metal. I know I am going to suffer for it when the car finally it's the road though

I have a genuine driver's rear wing if you are ever down in Wiltshire - bought a few years ago for my black GTi when quarter panels were a lot cheaper than they are now

I've just won a rear floor section on ebay, and have placed orders for front floor sections for both sides - although they are for the mk2 but I am hoping I can still use them as I'm under the impression its only the exhaust tunnel that is different? If not I've just wasted some money lol.

Correct. The tunnel is the only main difference in the floor pressing so you can either cut this or reshape it to suit. The little differences are the floor stampings (raised circular and square bumps) Need any other panels let me know as I may have something suitable for you as I have few left over.

Thanks for that mate, having them delivered tomorrow and I've booked next week off to have a good crack at it. I picked up the rear floor panel today, looks a decent panel so should help a lot.

What else you got lying about then?

I think I'm going to tax it for another 6 months as I've only driven 700 miles this year, and hell am I putting all this work in to use it for only two days.

My thoughts on the sunroof drains is to drill the sill and fit a grommet and have the drain tube exiting through there. Does that sound plausible?

I have alsorts, might be best if you pop over and have a rumage lol

Drain tubes sound fine, I think if you want to make a propper exit for the drain tubes it may be worth getting some metal tubing and welding bits in into th sills and connect the pipes onto these that way you shouldn't find the pipes creeping up inside the sills.

Will have to sort it out then Haven't got a passenger side front floor panel have you? The place I ordered from advertised it as a N/S but sent an O/S

Good shout with the metal tube, sounds like a better plan

It's hard work! The more I clean up, the more rot I find. I've now got to repair the A pillar/front end chassis leg as I wasn't aware of it being a massive water trap and its rotten on the outer section. I ground off the seam sealant and it emptied its guts - easily a few 100ml of water

I'm only trying to get it ready for an MoT but wanting to do it correctly (or as correctly as I can manage) its turning into a part restoration!
