I am going to start a journal now so I can keep this thread updated and so I don't keep making threads in the Gallery.
I bought this from a 91 year old lady who has owned it from new and cared for it really well. It has been serviced every year at MOT time so runs really well too.

First thing to do when I got it home was to get it running. I bit of fresh petrol and a jump and its running sweet.

The weekend arrives and I bought a new air and oil filter, new expansion tank cap, thermostat gasket and some fresh coolant. Put the new filters in and changed the oil and coolant. Also bought a brand new battery as the existing one wasn't even taking a charge. Then me and the girlfriend spend the afternoon washing it inside and out. Its the longest I have ever spent washing a car but well worth the time and effort I think.

Women and hoovers!

Just need to book it in for an MOT now.

Edd*

It looks immaculate mate. Absolutely stunning motor.
Whats the plans? Slam it, wide wheels, nice shiny subtle exhaust and a monster engine?

Cheers mate

Its gonna be low over some deep wheels, probs get an exhaust, maniflow or similar to give it a nice sound. Not sure I wanna do anything to the engine, its got so few miles on it I want to leave it well alone and keep it reliable.
Got the lump from the turbo which is sitting up the unit unused until I get round to restoring the turbo shell though. Temptation is almost unbearable!

Could always take the engine out and keep it as it is, OR give it a full rebuild, new bearings etc just to freshen it up. That way, you can put the turbo in it, and if anything should happen, you can whip the turbo out and stick the original back in.

I taxed it last night and went for a drive. I love it! Its so much fun to drive, even pootling along at 30. The ride is pretty firm, and it handles much better than the 1.8 ever did
The brakes are so wickedly evily good, the back wheels lock before the fronts, is that supposed to happen? Pretty gutted because I had to drive it to work in the rain this morning
Need to get it waxoyled asap!

rear wheels definitely shouldnt lock before the front!

it has extra dampers on it which will help the handling and is lighter despite the heavyer engine.

These basic mk1 bad boys still have front shocks and front ARB's as standard!! Plus an under 10k Metro will drive nice.

Thanks Andy. I think I have come up with a rough idea of what I want to do. Since im getting rid of all of my cars bar this, the van and the turbo I can really get stuck into the turbo soon.
Im going to get some nice wheels for this and maybe an exhaust.
Im gonna pull the turbo lump apart and rebuild it. I really want to build an engine so I can learn about cranks, con rods and bearings and stuff.

Im gonna need a test rig for the finished turbo lump........

Have you seen those 13's on eaby at the minute, not wellers but very rare looking 5 spoke wheels, like the ERA turbo wheels, would look good.

Wellers are horrible wheels I think, in white they would look daft, would not look to bad in black though on that car.

its got a seperate starter solenoid

EDIT: haha if you keep the ignition key turned after the engine is started you can almost squeeze more BPH out the starter moter than what the engine has got
