Fish freak! MP Admin Posts: 14989 Location: Birmingham | Oh how I wish I still had my perfect floors on the first page of this journal! Work has started to get the GTa ready for TroFest in September as my MoT ran out in July, and it needs the brakes sorting and the rot repairing at the very least. I'm also in the process of fitting TF bottom ball joints as one was an advisory on last years MoT, but I think I could do with some TF steering arms now to go with the ball joints and the red band rack. Today I removed the passenger front seat rear mount and cut the rot out of the floor including half of the strength channel (the one tht runs from the middle of the car to the sill). I need to pick up some metal this week and work on the panel to weld in place. I've also got a pair of inner sills on their way to utilise as I want to take a few cm out above where the floor is rotten as I can see signs of rust up there, even though the panel hasn't gone yet. The next item will be the passenger front jacking point as that is well and truly rotten. The drivers inner sill has also gone so that will be the following item to be tackled. | ||

Fish freak! MP Admin Posts: 14989 Location: Birmingham | Here is a little glimpse of what I have uncovered so far, plenty to keep me busy! Firstly the passenger jacking point is very rotten. The plan is to cut it out and leave it out, I never use them as I prefer the safety of the subframes so they are pointless. Again, pretty damn rotten and I will need to remove a fair amount of this sill to find clean metal, and more than likely the external sill as well. IMAG0709_1 by Pandy100, on Flickr This is the part I am working on at the minute, rotten right under the seat mount and through the support channel. IMAG0707_1 by Pandy100, on Flickr Realising I need to do the job correctly or face doing it again in a few years I picked up a spot weld drill and removed the seat mount IMAG0716_1 by Pandy100, on Flickr And then after removing the underseal and revealing where the rot is, I cut a section out (the reason its triangular is that I wanted to keep as much of the good metal in the car as possible) IMG_20130817_155927_1 by Pandy100, on Flickr And that is as far as I have got with it. I am waiting on a pair of inner sills, and will be removing some more metal in the sill section around the above seat mount rot this week with the intention of getting it all refreshed and patched up by the weekend - to move onto the next part! I also had a cat climb up through the hole the other day and my neighbour said it was going mental running around inside the car :lol: | ||

Events Organiser MP Admin Posts: 1923 Location: Somerset | Have your jacking points been welded in the past Andy? That reminds me of the rot on the purple one, R reg's are awful for rust. This proves it, if its an R reg, has a sunroof and lives outside for most of its life its going to need welding lol. | ||

It's spread a little onto the classic rail too! Yep. I'll definitely be routing the sunroof drains externally through the sills. | ||

To try and keep it that way I have taken the heatgun to all the soundproofing on the floor pans as it forms a sandwich for he damp to eat away the metal. I know I am going to suffer for it when the car finally it's the road though I have a genuine driver's rear wing if you are ever down in Wiltshire - bought a few years ago for my black GTi when quarter panels were a lot cheaper than they are now | ||

MP Admin Posts: 14989 Location: Birmingham | I've just won a rear floor section on ebay, and have placed orders for front floor sections for both sides - although they are for the mk2 but I am hoping I can still use them as I'm under the impression its only the exhaust tunnel that is different? If not I've just wasted some money lol. | ||

Metro Mad Posts: 7653 Location: Tamworth, Staffs | Correct. The tunnel is the only main difference in the floor pressing so you can either cut this or reshape it to suit. The little differences are the floor stampings (raised circular and square bumps) Need any other panels let me know as I may have something suitable for you as I have few left over. | ||

Fish freak! MP Admin Posts: 14989 Location: Birmingham | Thanks for that mate, having them delivered tomorrow and I've booked next week off to have a good crack at it. I picked up the rear floor panel today, looks a decent panel so should help a lot. What else you got lying about then? I think I'm going to tax it for another 6 months as I've only driven 700 miles this year, and hell am I putting all this work in to use it for only two days. My thoughts on the sunroof drains is to drill the sill and fit a grommet and have the drain tube exiting through there. Does that sound plausible? | ||

Metro Mad Posts: 7653 Location: Tamworth, Staffs | I have alsorts, might be best if you pop over and have a rumage lol Drain tubes sound fine, I think if you want to make a propper exit for the drain tubes it may be worth getting some metal tubing and welding bits in into th sills and connect the pipes onto these that way you shouldn't find the pipes creeping up inside the sills. | ||

Fish freak! MP Admin Posts: 14989 Location: Birmingham | It's hard work! The more I clean up, the more rot I find. I've now got to repair the A pillar/front end chassis leg as I wasn't aware of it being a massive water trap and its rotten on the outer section. I ground off the seam sealant and it emptied its guts - easily a few 100ml of water I'm only trying to get it ready for an MoT but wanting to do it correctly (or as correctly as I can manage) its turning into a part restoration! | ||
