every now and again my indicators and dash lights half glow up and if there is an electrical load on the engine it staves the fuel pump of current and kills the engine, if i switch off lights, heater etc the engine will run (just) and the indicators stay half lit

its starting to get bloody inconvient now as its happened a few times at night and i cant switch on the lights or the engine dies

ive spent all last weekend trying to find the bad earth the only success ive had is that if i slam the boot i can make it come and go which points to a problem at the rear any ideas or help is greatfully recieved!

My mate had a similar problem in his ford KA, he had new rear lights fitted and then started getting problems with the engine, it turns out the whole loom earths in the boot by the lights, who would have thought rear lights would stop the engine running!

I think the Metro has earths in a number of places though but there is one in the boot on the left hand side as you look in, worth checking.

Also have you thought about it being an alternator problem, if the regulator is damaged then you will get similar symptoms as the system will be getting AC voltage and a reduced amount of DC.

I had a similar prob with my gti last month but the earth on the light unit was a rusty and green mush, sort that earth out and it should be cured.

Hi Roy

The earth bonding point at the rear of the car I don't think is the problem - although the earth bonding
for the fuel pump is connected to that point.

You say problems with indicators and dash lighs as well. I think your problem is a u/s fusebox.

The fuse box caused me no end of trouble and it seems to be a common weak point.
Oddly enough I found a rear earth connection was completely disconnected on my car and I didn't have any problems at the time

Hi Alex

Roy has three isolated ccts all causing problems - so yes my "nose" says fusebox - like yours.

Perhaps Roy should read that thread regarding your problem.

Good idea Tony, these are the threads covering the electrical faults I had - both boil down to poor connections in the fuse box.

Cheers for that Tony, interesting read. I shall have to get on with it soon – prevention is better than a cure!
I have dropped you a PM about posting links.
