i have reved it to 6,000 to see if it went and it did but if i rev it a few times quickly then it will not rev just suck and the revs drop.help needed asap please as i have work tonight in my car.

Hi Craig

I was thinking maybe an air lock??

BUT

I drained the tank on the GTi and no problems starting the car when I got it back. Put tank back
on - put two gallons of petrol in it and it started first time. So maybe not an air lock.

You may have the usual "Sods Law" of another problem suddenly arising after another one hopefully sorted.
Still check the ign cct etc.- coil HT leads spark plugs.

maybe the fuel pump you put in is an spi one too, or there is a blackage in the pipes, i think someone on here said something about priming the fuel pipe, not 100% sure what he meant though, try taking the fuel line off and spinning it over with the pipe in a clear bottle to see what it does. marc

Take it for a good run and bounce it of the limiter before you do anything else.

only on for about 20mins as im off to reading in a bit.fuel pump now revs freely most of the time to 6,000 but no further without forcing it.ive bounced it off the limiter but it sounds quite rough compared to before.
and you never guess wat happened to me last night.i was driving along then all of a sudden i here this rattle....gets louder....so i slow down and the rattle stops.somthing it the bottem of my car and bounces out the back.....
so i stoped to find out that my CRANK pully had worked its way loose and had come off!!!hunted it down and fitted it by the road side.
i dont think im suppsose to go to reading.....
mr unlucky!! mite be after a gti fuel pump in a little while.see who this one goes.

I'm guessing it was the alternator drive pulley, if it'd been the crank one you'd have known about it a bit more LOL

okay, not being funny norm but i was the one who had to pull over and refit the pully to the car.it was the crank shaft pully.
if this was my engine then the blue pully.
