Have done quite well but now want to improve things:

The car handles like a roller-skate at speed. The car has been 4 wheel laser aligned and the tyres are okay. The suspension is standard. Other people have suggested lowering the car and increasing the pressure will improve things.

If this is so how should it be done? Who can do it? How low? I still want the car to ride okay and look 'standard'

On the subject of tyres what do people think are the best tyres to use on the GTi?

Also:

The fan does not work. I have tested the circuit and replaced the switch. After replacing the switch it did work for a whilst. Any suggestions? The rad is not in the best of condition. Could this be the problem? The temp remains normal except in heavy traffic where it gets hot (unless the fan cuts in).

Thanks...

Lowering and making the suspension indipendant will improve the car so much and make you feel like your driving a gokart and not a roller skate

The fan problem, have you check the condition of the wiring terminals as they could be corroded and will need replacing, if the radiaotr is worn with fins missing then it will cause the car to run hotter therefor the fan should be in quicker and more often. If the terminals for the switch are fine then trace the wiring all the way back to the fan and power feed to make sure there are no breaks etc and then check that the fan is in good condition.

with tyres, for the original 13's yoko and toyo's are the best to go for, then dunlops.

Im running Yokohama A510's on my Si, which are 185/55/13's, however nolonger produced...these are about as good as you will get. Toyo being next best but steer away from Camac and Pirellis p600's on a par. Dunlop D8's were Standard factory fitment and seem very slightly better.
