Glad to see youre still pushing on with mods cj, the rack is fairly simple to change in situ. Make things easier by taking of the tre's and steering gaitors before removal and fitting. Get the correct steering arms and throw it all on in one go.

Why doesnt the downpipe fit to the decat? I welded an 8" extension to my downpipe, cut just before the cat and it lines up spot on with the decat. I had to file quite a bit from the downpipe to make the extension sit flush, straight and parallel to the rest of the system. If anything it fits better than the gti downpipe and pulls the decat furtur away from the pg1 gear linkage. The downpipe flange was previously resting against the stabilizer bar.

Well the decat I had fitted was made with the exhaust manifold which came with the engine and whoever made it didn't actually line it up properly so its twisted rather than lining up.

Bit of an update with future plans...

After Trofest and going out in the 1.8t of Seans, I have decided that in the new year to go down the turbo route but for now I am replacing as much of the old worn parts with new parts as well as upgrading where its possible with polybushes and MGF parts.

Current plans are:
Adjustable shocks(got plates in, just need the shocks)
MGF rear cans(need)
MGF Redband steering rack(already got)
MGF front wishbones(already got with polybushes)
Refurb front calipers
GTi rear cans(need)

The turbo lump I have a few ideas about, I have a spare VVC engine sat here which I am contemplating using the head off on the turbo conversion. I am planning on using a VNT turbo with a simple vein controller to try and get as smooth power delivery as possible but this will be done once the conversion fully working(or the standard turbo dies) as I will need to write the programming myself for the controller and it will add complications to the conversion.

Tonight, I have bled the coolant system through and filled it with new OAT coolant and fitted my nice clean header tank whilst I was messing about.

Old header tank:

New one:

Currently the engine bay looks like this:

The new wishbones, modified to give -1 deg of camber:

Bit of a difference from when I got it:

Update time!

As some might have seen(others might not) it was there yesterday on the MP stand, took a lot of work and quite a late night on the Friday but was most certainly worth it and was very happy to see all the old faces and some new ones too(one being 26 days old...)

The current list of bits done; Welding, remap.
Current list of bits to do: Steering rack, Wishbones, Service, Front brakes, Front hydro cans, Headlights, Rollcage, Rear arches

Not much eh?

The welding was quite significant and why it took so long to get back on the road, as usual with metros, start cutting and don't stop until a large hole has appeared or the grinder breaks. I have still got the rear arches to do, but the car has had:

Both sills, inner and outer
Floors, both drivers and passengers
Rear spreader plates
Jacking points rebuilt all round

The plates have been put in using 1mm thick steel, both inside and outside of the car after removing all of the older metal and with a more modern version of waxoyl inside the sills and under the car to try and make it as resistant to corrosion as possible, however how long it will last I have no idea.

Some pics of the work:

Under:

Quite a lot done, but the garage have been excellent so far and very good humoured about the car and apparently used to service loads so are used to seeing them.

Also done, a remap. I have been looking into the turbo conversion route for quite a while, especially after going out in Seans and feeling the torque of them. However, there has always been a nagging feeling that for what this car is going to be used for, a turbo might not be the best option as the engines can be a bit picky and imo, the powerband of a turbo can never really match a NASP. Regardless of how the car is mapped, a turbo will run out of power before the redline as the turbo will never be able to flow enough, and if the turbo can flow enough, it will be quite laggy. Neither of which I really fancy on a track, even after using a turbo charged daily for the past 12 months, I still find it is more diesel in the way the power is delivered than a petrol NASP.
Anyways, I got a ZnF remap at POL yesterday, apparently with the mods on my car, the "Race" tune was most suited which on a standard ZR160 gives 10% more power accross the rev range and a 7450rpm redline, on mine it could be anything from 10% upwards. Either way, it is bloody fast and reminded me of why the car was kept when I took it off the road nearly 18 months ago...

Depends what you could class as an update, currently the car is on axle stands with the passenger hub and driveshaft removed, and the gearbox seperated from the engine. I was mid clutch change a few weekends ago and had to stop everything due to a family emergency so hoping to crack on this Saturday and finish off. Going to remove the engine, clean it up, do the cambelt/waterpump/tensioner as well as fit some offset dowels and the new clutch before dropping it back in and hopefully, back on the road next week to see how it behaves.
Also looking into getting rid of my half leather interior and getting a set of bucket seats for the car as its going to be getting caged and harness' fitted at some point because I don't really fancy something happening without any sort of protection around me.

Possibly, however have been out the metro scene for a while so I have no idea on prices and it might just be easier to keep them yet.

Small update on this, spent the last weekend doing the clutch, cambelt, waterpump and fitting offset dowels to the exhaust cam. Ended up removing the engine from the car to make it easier, and then did all the bits on the car. Old clutch was completely shot, under-specced and had burn marks on it, not to mention the release bearing was seized. So I fitted a brand new Borg and Beck clutch kit and hoping that it can deal with the power now...

I am also interested in people's opinion of 14" wheels on track, do they improve or worsen handling? I am thinking of getting a set of either wide steels or MPi wheels but not sure if its worth the outlay or not.

As Facebook sucks, I thought I would do a bit of a journal update on the car, considering POL was cancelled...

Recently I have fitted MGF cans to the front, after taking the cones out of the cans and comparing them to the lowered ones I had fitted previously, the top of the "mushroom" shape is around 50% bigger than what I had fitted previously and now the front end feels MUCH more stiff but yet not upset and bouncing the car around when hitting bumps. Win Win.
Other than that, just general maintenence, I suspect that in October I will be taking the car off the road, into the garage and stripped down so I can sort the rear arches and tidy the bodywork up, as well as getting my arse into gear for a PG1 conversion. Planning on taking my time with it so I can get it done right and fingers crossed, out on track next summer.

Couple of photos from Pre-POL prep and where I ended up after hearing POL was cancelled(I found snow!)

What Mods to the bottom arms did you do to get the camber?

I have a Mk3 160 VVC on an MGTF/F sub-frame that I'm stripping for a shell restoration/rust deletion!! and most likely a conversion to a road rally car. I have a red band rack to fit, and am planning on using MGF steering arms and bottom arms, and will have it all poly-bushed. Just want to make sure of what needs to be changed all together to get it right!!
