Hi all,

So I was browsing Ebay as I often do and came across a super cheap 111SI which was going for £50. Curiosity got the better of me and I put in a maximum of bid of £150. I lost by £1 and completely forgot about it since I really don't need another one!

I was chatting with Jason Barnes from the Metro Owners Club whilst at work and through came a second chance offer since the original winners had gone to pick the car up and decided that they didn't want it (Much to the owners dismay). I had a chat with Jason about how I didn't need another and we decided to go halves! I made a £120 offer which was accepted. So... £60 each and we ended up with this little pup!

Let's start with the Ebay ad.

The owner agreed to drive the car to me in Northampton from his home in Walthom cross... and I'd give him a lift home. I waited around on Saturday morning and eventually this turned up!

She was parked up next to my 114GSI and I didn't even bother to inspect her before signing over the V5, giving the man his money and taking him home!

So, what did our £60 get us? Let's start with some overall pictures.

Filthy!

Nice dealer plates, original sticker is there too!

And I deliver takeaways in the evening... she's proving an ideal car and it's nice not to have nice wheels and paint to worry about for once!

Today I took her to the local morrisons washstop and went mad with the jet wash and hot shampoo! The dirt and grime that came off was incredible! There's layers of the stuff. All of the seals are green and perished so that'll be something to sort.

She came up well.

I also gave the interior a good clean but I'll do more tomorrow and post some pics. The seat covers which are now in the bin but they revealed lovely unworn seats that just need a clean!

Tomorrow I'll give the car a clay, polish and wax for fun and see how she comes up. I feel some parts are beyond saving but it's good fun.

She was listed as needing work on emissions for the MOT. So far I can see:

Rotten sill.
Emissions - there is an exhaust leak so fixing this and a good service might help, I havn't had it on a machine myself but the owner advised me it's a problem.
Hydragas suspension too low drivers front with little movement
3 wiper blades ineffective/perished.

Her MOT history is VERY clean with few advisories and there is a good service history. Even if she traveled only 800 miles between years in her first 5 years she was serviced!

Jason has ordered some original R100 mats from Rimmerbros and I think theres plans for her to meet 'other daddy' on Thursday.

So all in... we're a bit mad! This is one that should probably be scrapped But there is something attractive to us both about restoring an underdog and taking her to shows... maybe a long distance rally or two!

Thanks for reading and stick with us if you got this far!

Craig and Jason

Hi Craig, tbf it looks a good honest car, not mucked with and not mint.

As per emissions, chances are, as an SPi it needs a good thrash to get the engine and cat hot, working properly and to clean out residule carbon. This will be useful and maybe even free the engine up a bit if it has been used for shopping trips it's whole life. A full service will help it too.

If ridiculously high, then could be a duff CTS or even TPS as per my GTi when I got it. Only worked that out with the retro diagnostics machine I have. Can use if you need and are local.

Nice little buy. One to keep original and mint for prosperity?

Cheers for the replies guys! She's very clean indeed. Nice to see a project thread on here still gets attention and replies!

David, she's staying standard for sure! She's far too original and has stayed pure for too long to be ruined now.

Gave the engine bay a clean (it needs more)

Also spotted this sweet little M reg Mk3 in Morrisons. Northampton car all it's life. 1.4Li Auto! I had one of those in blue

I still miss mine! She got hit by a speeding car and completely written off!

In Muriel news no amount of lint rolling and hoovering was getting the dog hairs off and it was COVERED! It's a pet hate of mine (If you'll pardon the pun). At least I hope they're dog hairs

An hour later! Clean!

I decided to tackle the faded paint on the drivers wing and front bumper last night and here are the results.

I've always stayed away from T-Cut but I was in Morrisons and I didn't have anything else to hand so I grabbed some T-Cut. I already had some Super Resin and turtle wax (classic :gimme which I use on my other Metro. It's 20 year old paint and the car was cheap so I had nothing to lose!

If I wanted to do it properly I think I'd be better to use a more aggressive compound and take it back quite a bit further and that way the shine might remain but for now this is a big improvement on how it was! I was impressed with the performance of the T-Cut!

So see above for the faded bumper and wing.

And heres a half and half just after some cutting.

and the wing

Chucked on some polish and some wax

And then it was all going a little too well so I thought I'd better run over my brand new bottle of t-cut :gimme:

And then I got to work on the tailgate 'plinth' which brought the appearance of the back of the car down a lot!

And all done next to her sister!

So a before and after, It only took an hour and I was happy with the results. Adrian tells me it's been painted in the past hence it isnt fading uniformly (just the front bumper and wing) so I'm not holding my breath that it'll stay looking fresh... time will tell on that front!

Good work Craig. Don't forget to get a good quality wax on there or it will fade in no time
