Hi all,

Thought you might like to see my next project. Barn find of 15 years... been dry stored until we dragged it out last weekend. It's a 1988 Mini Designer... Complete with its original (and disgusting) interior, and all the rust you'd expect from a Mini of this age.

Plans are an allspeed subframe with a 1400 Twin Cam K-series in the front. I want to refrain Mini PCD front and rear and run 10x7 Wellers, banded an inch from the original 10x6's in my garage. Covered by Huddersfield Minispares group 6 arches. Front will be Mk1 inspired, rear will be Mk2 with Mk1 bootlid.

Final colour will be MG Trophy Blue.

Sounds good although not sure on the colour choice... Might look a bit chavy on a mini. With MK1 parts on it id say it would look better in an older colour.

Agree with adrian on the colour choice, what about a storm grey, as found on the GTi's, I reckon that would look nice

Good luck with the project mate

I understand what you mean about the colour, but with the Morris Cooper S grill, badge, Over-riders and corner bars it really works for me as a Mk1.

Heres my friends Pete's Mini, in a similar MG metallic blue. I won't be on as much camber at the front and the car will look very different to this as a final product, but this is my main inspiration.

Interesting project,

trophy blue does look very modern, your friends mini looks awesome and a more retro metalic blue which suits it,

How long has it been off the road? Do you know if its been SORN all these years? Got a car thats been off the road years and not SORN, probably going to have to go to my local dvla office to sort it.

I have everything to go with it, as far as I know its been on a SORN for 15 years. The original owner of the land it was on passed away, and the land was put up for sale. Purchased for horses to go on... Mini sat in a little barn waiting for somebody to save it.

Hoping that getting the logbook in my name won't be too much of a song and dance. Will keep you updated as to how that go's...

I've had a little poke, and as far as I can see its genuinely, a very good little shell. The floor will need patching, the boot floor will need replacing in its entirety, the sills looked OK and are the originals, but I'm not expecting wonders. It's going to need a 3" patch (before I start grinding...) on each side rear window. Front end needs doing, that will be a 2 peice fiberglass replacement until I can afford steel, the scuttle actually looked and felt solid, as did the flitches, but again, I'm not expecting a lot, and being an '88 Mini, it will be rotten in all the above places.

I can never see the point of going MK1/2 front and/or back but using a modern colour, always looks a bit at odds

Cheers mate! I've been around long enough to know you can hand over 4k for one that looks nice and it'll be just as bad as this underneath! just need to keep myself motivated and tackle each bit as it comes.. it'll get finished one day!

A bit more progress lately... Got her subbys off and the true extent of the rust was relevealed. In fairness, it's not THAT bad.. but the rear shock mounts have rusted in awkward places aswell as the door bins etc. I'll be cutting away the entire rear quarter panels, and fitting a flat boot floor, new rear arches, rear quarters, rear valence and the right hand corner of the rear of the car.

Managed to get the car fully stripped and onto axle stands today without even the use of a jack.. left it at home but had to get the job done. Pretty impressed considering I'm a right scrawny sh*t

Her last few moments as a Mini with wheels..

And a pretty picture

Not really much progress on this. Taken the TRO of the road to fit a 16v so im saving a bunch of money not having her on the road so that's going towards mini panels
