Anyone remember that green Fiat 128 that I posted up a while back?
Well, here it is what it looks like now.

We need to get some strength back into it now, we are going to weld some inch box to brace it all and make the floor level. We still need to work out how we are going to close up the cab. We are going to try and use the bit of roof with the back window in. Then we are going to weld the back doors shut and smooth it all off and make it look pretty.
Apparantly the Uno turbo engine is based on the same lump thats in the 128 too......

Edd, that's a rare motor and you've killed it!

I can only salute your ingenuity but that would of been wicked just slammed over some wide steels with a typical rorty Fiat exhaust and a bit of Abarth striping. Still, good luck with it!

Any updates on the Turbo? That's what I'm really watching.

No updates on the turbo yet, gotta sort out all the other cars up the unit before I can even get a look in at it

Update time!

When we posted this up on Retro-Rides we got loads of abuse and people were saying we had ruined the car and they were putting bets on how long it would be before it was in the scrappers.
This just motivated us even more to get it done, so we went down the unit and got stuck in!

First of all we welded in some plate to strengthen the areas where we were going to join the braces to the body. Then we did some measuring, measured some more, then cut some 2" box. We then put it in place and welded it down.

Then we did the same between the rear turrets. Plated up where the brace joins the body and fixed the brace in place.

So now we've got a front and rear brace from side to side. Time to put some in longways.

After much careful measuring, umming, ahhing, more measuring, some cutting and sticking, we ended up with this:

Then we put a couple of diagonals at the very rear.

We need to get a bit more steel to make some braces to go inside the door skins and then seal the cab.

We mocked up the rear bench in the front which really looked the part. Its so comfortable, we would have to re-locate the handbrake, which I think is going to be a pain but its andrews car and its what he wants to do.

So, I hope a few of you have a little more faith in us now.

Phew, I'm off to bed.

Looking good edd, heres a Sh*t quick photoshop just to give a rough look at what the cab could look a bit like maybe?

edit: you going to be giving it a completely flat bed?

Ala a proper pickup?

Yep, think you let yourself in for some abuse by posting on there!

Being honest, I'm not a great fan of the project but I am a big fan of the work that you're putting into it and I'd be delighted to see it on the road and proving everyone wrong. Bracing looks good and just the job for laying a false floor over. Think you can feel pretty chuffed with that. Keep it going!

Thanks mate. We are so determined to carry this through and prove people wrong. This is our first major project so we are learning all the time. Feel really pleased with what we have achieved so far though.

Cheers mate. I love how this project is dividing opinions and proper upsetting people
We've got a bit more bracing to do and then we can start work on sealing up the cab.
I want to get a flat sheet of steel and put a hole for a window in it but Andrew is saying he wants to try and use the old rear window. We are back down there on Thursday, so I think we are going to trim the window down and see if we can get it to sit right. Personally I think it won't look right because the window will slope too much and we will loose space in the bed.

Will keep you updated.

Edd

People on retro rides deserve offending - all they talk about is banded steels, cut down springs and bloody roofracks!

UPDATE TIME!

Well, its been a while since I have updated this. We have been busy with other things, but we need space in the unit now so we need to finish this.
Most of this progress is by Andrew, I have been working on the van. We have welded the doors shut and ground the welds down, should look ok once its painted, looks a bit scruffy now though. The doors have braces in them, personally I would have put them sloping the OTHER way, but I wasn't there when he did that
He has also made up a frame and put the bench from the back of the car into the cab. Its a little uncomfortable because of the angle of the back of the seat but it looks the tits. I don't know what hes going to do about the handbrake, hes got a hole in the seat but I don't think that is accessible enough for the MOT. Also got the cross welded in to mount the rear of the cab on. We have got the sheet for the cab, but we need to measure it up and cut it to shape. Hopefully its coming together

He had to cut the gearstick and weld it back together at an angle so it would clear the seat. You can just about make it out in this picture:

Sorry about the crappy phone pictures.

what about a pull handle type handbrake as in the mercs, extend the cable up to the dash somewhere.
