Doesnt matter what people think, it's your car so do what you want with it.

Mine's going yellow with black bits so it looks like a mutant bumblebee.

I wouldn't go for matt/primer red personally. If you are set on going red I would go for a slightly different red, to be different yet subtle. I would consider candy red personally. That's just my opinion though. As ding said it's your car so up to you, all we can do is suggest ideas.

Red Oxide was done to death at one point...
(though granted, not on Metros)...
but I don't think it's been done in a while!?
Is easy to touch up for any minor cosmetic repairs you do...
and it's then a consistent basecoat for a shiny red if you change your mind.
I was going to red oxide 1 car, then lacquer it with some green pearl, just to be different!?

I would paint the patches in the correct shade of red. Last time i cleaned a set of seat belts i used a normal soap based interior cleaner that you rub and remove with a moist cloth and then leave them to dry and that turned out ok

Part at a time

Wouldn't cost as much doing it yourself with cans but the primer idea seems more logical.
