it is doing my head in now to the point i will get a hammer out on it lol for the last 2 weeks now every day you drive for about 5 mins all fine then very time you come to a stop the car either cuts out or the revs drop so low you have to plant your floor to stop it cutting out

so what do you think it can be ??? as well is there a different carb i can fit ie weber or from another metro ????

thank's pete

Seems like the idle speed is to low, has someone been messing with the idle speed knob? this is what you need to adjust to increse idle speed. I suggest you fill the daspot up with oil as well. If you have a tachomoter you can check idle speed, should be set at 850rpm + or - 50 rpm, but if you dont have one just turn the idle speed up untill it stops stalling and the idle is not lumpy.

Will try and post a pic later to give you an idea of where to fill with oil and adjust idle

No 1, is where you need to unscrew and fill with oil
no 12, is idle speed adjusting knob

has been suggested to me to get the carb serviced, as its also producing crap mpg

If you look at item 4 on the drawing, it is just the thin tube coming from the top of the piston that needs oil in it. Don't fill the whole top half of the carb up . If you remove the piston damper and then push it back in, so long as there is a firm resistance to the damper being pushed in, the oil level is ok. The fault you have will not be caused by low dashpot oil, anyway. Low dashpot oil just causes a flatspot on acceleration, it will not cause it to cut out when you come to a stop.

Is the problem occuring once the engine has warmed up (and after you have closed the choke), or does it happen when still cold and the choke on? How many miles has the car done? The chances are that the carb is in need of a full overhaul. The kit cost about £50. In my opinion it is fairly pointless putting a used, unknown carb from a scrap yard on your car as it may just have the same problem, and the cheap kit that just has new gaskets and o-rings in it is pointless. It needs a new jet and needle at the same time. Can the timing be adjusted on the K series carb engine? If so, check this out as well.

I just use the standard metro 10/40 engine oil never had any problems with that for me, MGTURBO has some valid points but it wont hurt to do I bit of maintenance like checking dashpot oil, plus turning the idle speed up a bit is at least a temporally solution if the problem is something else like worn needle or jet, or just simply the carb needs a good tune up, its hard to say from a distance.

Just normal engine oil is fine for the dashpot, as timmyquick said. There is loads of information all over the net about SU dashpot oil selection, but it really isn't going to make any discernable difference on a road car.

It could be the pump. Did you strip the carb down? The filter could be clogged on the needle valve, preventing full flow. Is there an external fuel filter that might require replacement?
