Hi fellas,

I've put my indicators on a 3 way toggle switch, on, off, on..I've wired it up to the original left and right stalk wires, green & white, green & red. When I switc each one on they just stay on and don't flash.

I've fitted a new flasher relay so I know it's not that, I can't hear it tick/switch though when I flick the switch to either indicator. Does it need a power supply from elsewhere..!...really as far as I can see all ivecdone is swap the stalk for a switch..!,,

Any help would be great here..

Thanks, Terry

Sure you didn't wire it up to the light switch?
R100 or earlier stalks you've done it to?

Poss the most important question... new relay the EXACT same type??
I ordered a wrong one and had to swap 2 wires around for the relay...
turned on but wouldn't flash! (LED type relay, if it makes any difference)

Cheers for the reply mate, I think I may have solved it though. As I'm running a wire direct to the battery to test it, it looks like I'm actually bypassing the flasher unit, hence the light only stays on and doesn't flash. When I've looked it obvious really, I need to pick up the common live that would normally go to the stalk, then touch either direction wire on it to test it flashes.

Once I've proved they work I'll attach the common to the middle post on the switch, and either direction wire to the other posts each side. I'll let you know how it goes, should be able to get back under the dash in a day or so.

Had to replace a broken stalk with a toggle switch in a '71 Beetle.
No matter what I did, hazards came on instead of indicators!!
Checked and rechecked everything I'd done a dozen times... still the same!

The bloody common warning light was linking both sides together!!

Guys I'm stumped here,

I'm trying but just can't seem to work out which wire is the common for the indicators, any help would be great.

Which model do you have?
On a Mk2 it should be:
'LGN' into the switch,
'GR' out to the left indicators,
'GW' out to the right indicators.
Expect a Mk3 to be similar as they're the same basic stalks.

Hi marv,

I have a K reg GTi mate, I just can't make head nor take of the Haynes..just whe. I think I've cracked it..back to square one. The only other thing I can think of is the new flasher unit I bought isn't the same configuration as the original one, as I don't have that I'm guessing here.

I've just bought a new 2 prong flasher unit, simple in and out feed, I'll take that to the new fuse box and back to the battery, then I know I'm sorted. The output side of the flasher goes to the common on the 3 way switch and presto, should work...if not I'm gonna torch the car...lol.

You got a part number on the relay you're using?
I can look it up and check it against what I have.
Like I said, swapped to wires round in fusebox and it worked!
Saves messing with any more wiring etc if it's that simple?!
Why are you changing to a toggle switch anyway?
Racecar, moved away from steering wheel so it isn't knocked, but still fitted to keep it road legal?

Hi mate, I've done away with both stalks and fitted toggles on a dash panel I made, looks better and more in tune with a race car. It's a 4 prong one, has the numbers 30, 85, 86, 87 on it..3 proms one way and one the other.

All sorted guys, thanks for the input though, in the end I bought a 2 prong flasher unit from a local parts place and just words it into the six fuse box I've fitted, works a treat.
