Extreme Veteran Posts: 586 Location: brighouse just shy huddersfield | Is this viable? What if I motorised a pump? What would the MOT man say?

'88 MG METRO 1300 Posts: 1117 Location: Dudley, Midlands | Doable? - yes. Viable? - not really. (Thought long and hard over this one myself) Would need a load of open/close valves to stop all the units being linked. Pump, fluid reservoir, motor, valves, solenoids, high pressure pipes, wiring, dash mounted gauges and switches... LOT of weight! Be much simpler to just ditch the motor part, and build the pump in... and then you might as well just cut the legs of and keep the pump in the boot!?! Heavy, complicated and expensive... bad combination!!

Expert Posts: 1228 | I've seen it done. One of the Abingdon built Austin 1800 rally cars from the 1960s, had the old pumps with the long handles and round knobs on top in the back, unfortunately all you could see were the pumps, no idea how they were linked to the suspension. Spoke to the owner who said that they were all working. Pretty sure it was one of the cars built for the World Cup Rally in 1970, don't know if there are any pictures of the install about.

drive it like its hired | as long as its functional at mot time you would have no issue, advisories should be issued if it can be spotted. Insurance wise, again if it can cause an accident or mechanical failure your going to have an issue. Functionality wise, it will only work for looks wise. like lowering it when parked or cruising around at a meet. Fluid is the 'working fluid of the system' and adjusting the height was never meant to be done by adjusting the fluid content (pressure) in my opinion. Up to you, would look cool working. Nothing like air or hydraulics Edited by petrol_head 7/6/2015 11:32 PM
