Thought I'd best start a journal for the Metro GTi I acquired on Saturday.

Won't be doing too much for at least a few weeks as I've just bought a two-post ramp for my workshop, but need to get an old pit filled in and paint the floor etc first, then I can use it for the many jobs I have to do on my numerous vehicles. Anyway, I can start by showing the car in its current state plus whilst the work hasn't started just yet, my shopping for bits started yesterday, so I can show what's arrived so far and update as and when.

Firstly, the car as it is now. It was a one owner from new car, the guy who sold it was in his eighties at the time and he got rid to buy a scooter. It was sold to a guy in the Mini and Metro spares and repair business who was going to use it for trackdays, but never got round to doing anything with it and it was parked up on his driveway under a tree for over three years, that's when I bought it. The original owner was from North Wales and only ever used it relatively locally, so it's never seen a motorway or anything in its life.

And some of the new bits.

MGF Rear Hydragas Units for the front

MG TF Trophy AP Racing 4-Pot Calipers. I've got the discs and pads as well, but will be ditching those in favour of something much better

MGF Front Lower Ball Joints

AVO Adjustable front Shock Absorbers

Sparco Race/Rally Steering Wheel with a nice suede grip

Sparco anodised aluminium gearknob, nicely weighted for quick and precise changes

New Slam Panel

FIA Plumbed-In Fire Extinguisher

FIA Battery Isolator Switch, got one for inside and outside the car

New Battery, I connected this earlier and the car now fires up first turn of the key with no hesitation

New rear brake shoes. Will change everything on the car brake-wise. I like good brakes and don't like brakes on any car that's been standing for three years plus

New Oil Filter as naturally the engine will be getting a thorough refresh

New Fuel Filter as the car really didn't like the stale old fuel which I've now flushed out

That's all my shopping for now, but there's a LOT more to follow.

Wouldn't bother with the brakes, your going to need mgf trophy or tf 17s to make them fit.

They will fit under 15's without too much drama, It's been done. Just a bit of work required.

They will fit under 15" comps with a bit of grinding but I would check track tyre fitments before going any further

Just noticed your reg, just a few before mine

Got to be honest the benefits do not compensate for the downside - extra weight, reduced acceleration, reduced handling, increased weight of rotating mass. If you are intending to sprint/hillclimb it stick with 13's. You will not need stoppers that big, I race a 170-75bhp metro with standard calipers and 1166 pads - just get some 1177 pads and save your money. I am currently building a new car with wilwood 4 pots under standard wheels.

That brake and wheel combo was fitted to by far the fastest and best-handling Metro (well, Rover 100) I've ever seen and it was quicker round ever circuit it went to with the new wheels and stoppers than before with 13's and Rover 200 brakes.

The old wheels and tyres will be up for sale soon.

What tyres you going for? Have to agree with what has been mentioned already, i cant see any that there is any tyre in 15inch dia (that will fit a metro) that will be close to the actual track tyres available for a metro. You can have the best suspension set-up in the world but if the 4 patches keeping you on the black stuff arent up to scratch then you're on a back foot already. You can transform a car through tyre choice alone.

1166/1177 pads in Metro GTi calipers are more than capable upto and beyond 200bhp... this is fully tried and tested.

Good effort for saving the GTi from the breakers!!

I agree with everything just said. Even on 14in wheels you loose a bit of feel. Your far better sticking with 13in for the best handling and a good choice of tyres
