Hi all,

My VVC engine swap is just finished that I have a problem with my gearbox The guy who sold me is 416 gearbox sold me a bad one: bearings are dead!!!

When I put on the clutch pedal there is no noise but when my foot is not on the clutch pedal there is a noise witch vary with the engine revs. It's not a BIG noise but it's noisy enough to be noticed. It's like wwiiizzzz...

So I have two solutions:

* sort out my gearbox and change the bearings... A LOT OF WORK...

* sort out my R65U and change it with the PG1.

To fit the PG1 I need a rover 25 gearlinkage and I have to modify/cut and weld something but I don't really know what piece of the gearlinkage exactly, if someone have some advice or better some pics it will be great!!!

I need too the box subframe mounts (the rearone, witch fix the box to the car under the car AND the upper one on the top of the box witch fix the box on the subframe of the car) of a mgf. In my country (France) mgf in scrapyards are very very very rare (I have NEVER seen one of them).

I suppose that I need to modify my camshafts too...

If someone can help me or advise me on the way to go it will be nice.

Cheers all.

sounds like its just some play in the clutch release bearing, bnot the gearbox bearings themselves.

very common on rover metros, my mums old 1.1 with less than 20k miles used to do it, my current gti does it a bit too.

if the bearings in the actual gearbox are on their way out youll hear it grumbling, and eventually it'll start spewing oil onto the clutch.

clutch kit is brand new (0 miles), do you think it could be noisy even if is new?

Good thing to hear that... I hope you are right and that this is not my gearbox bearing...

Thnaks for reply mate.

Cheers.

did you use a clutch kit or just replace the plate as I believe the kit contains the release bearing...happened on my Mini,

You will need MGF drive shafts for the PG1 box and the flywheel too.

Do all PG1's have an LSD?
Will the drive shafts fit into my GTI hubs? If so, will I will the engine and box mount in the same position (with additional gbox mount)? Or will I have to get an MGF Subfarme?

Only the BRM will have an LSD as std(for as far as I know)

You will need an MGF REAR-subframe, and it won't fit without modding.

Also, does MGF subframe bolt straight in without any mods?

What the hell is BRM? Is that a Ltd edition MGF or is BRM a different type of PG1 gearbox?????

I think for starters you'll have to change the bellhousing and then the LSD for the T series is a different type to the one they use in the K series - not sure on the differences as thats as far as I looked into it.

I went for a BRM LSD gearbox on my VVC Metro and now that it's been reconned it really does the job well

Will the Torsen LSD Loose drive if one wheel is in the air like the suretrac one?

the torsen does need residual torque on the spinning wheel, so if one wheel is in the air, then no it wont lock. they never lock up totally either. however, theyre probably the smoothest and most progressive type of lsd you'll get, and work very well

Hi,

I have bought a clutch kit, all is new. The gearbox was in the garage without oil during one year, maybe it's the problem?

Cheers.

yes the PG1 doesnt have LSD, only the ones in BRM and Tomcat. but if u get a PG1 you can put afertmarket LSD in the PG1 or the ones from BRM and Tomcat, has far has i know.

one thing more, people always says that R65 from 114GTi wont handle the 1.8 convertion on metros cuse it ill break... i always used the stock gearbox and never had problems with it, i wonder why...

The standard 'box has been know to stand 1.8s, but I think it depends how it is used. lots of low rev driving and accelerating hard at low revs (i.e. using the extra torque of the 1.8) will kill it faster but revving the nuts off it is actually supposed to be kinder to the gearbox.

Also the age of the gearbox and condition of the bearings at the time of the conversion can be variable.

yep, they wear out easily enough anyway, my std gti box knackered its bearings at around 100k miles.

the main problem with it othr than eventual wear is the weak diff. dropping the clutch, hard gear changes and general hard driving can knacker them pretty easily.
