maybe some of you already know, but i found an Android app that works with a simple interface to read MEMS 1.6 and 1.9. other MEMS may be added in the future.

http://memsdiag.blogspot.de/

the free version is a bit of a nuisance due to its time limit, but may be enough for a quick look and error code reading. and great to make sure it will run on your device.

i'm in no way involved, but think its worth to spread the word

regarding the cable. do you use the mini-usb plug on your phone/tablet or in what way do you connect it?

yes, and you need an On The Go (OTG) USB adapter to connect the interface to. sadly my smartphone does not support OTG/Host mode so i have to use my tablet.
bluetooth would be very nice, but that may be difficult as no suitable interface exist, i've been told.

You can get cheap crappy android tablets for about £40 so one of those and the cable and adapter would be a fairly cheap diagnostics tool.

just for your information.
i could help out the developer with some bench and on-car testing, and MEMS 1.3 is now supported, too.
if not already done, the program will be updated soon.

and if someone needs one, i could supply the MEMS 1.3/1.6 3-pin connector. or even a tested interface.

Hi

I can read the all up to MEMs 3 on my laptop that plugs into the K line etc using the OBD socket in my Metro and can see live engine running data and stored fault codes, like this....

using what software? i know there are quite a lot possibilities to work with MEMS, like pscan.eu (what i highly recommend) or autocom cdp.
but my Metro still runs MEMS 1.3 so neither will work. pscan only works with MEMS 1.6 on right now, autocom with MEMS 1.9 on

Sykes Pickavant, old ones are cheap as chips on eBay these days, Handheld so you don't need anything else

sadly not available over here, and shipping from UK can be a bit prohibitive.
and they don't do data logging, do they?

Sorry to drag up an old (ish) topic, but I stumbled upon the whole mems diag thing whilst searching for diagnostic equipment on the net and am quite excited about it, then searching for mems diag info brought me here to familiar territory,
so what are peoples experience of it, and regarding the USB plug cable thing, from what I gather you buy a USB cable that's bare at one end that you join to a diagnostic plug that you then plug into the ECU diagnostic socket (in my case round 3 pin), I take it that to plug into your phone I'd need to adapt the cable further still since USB is too big?
Also why not cut out the middle man and replace the round 3 pin to a USB plug?
Anyone got any input to my questions?
Cheers

for me it works flawlessly. and some new features were added lately, like calculating air mass, helps to check if any modification got more air into the engine.

no, you don't use an USB cable and connect the diagnosis connector to it. you need an interface, think of virtual com port, FTDI, Prolific, etc, and this mostly is fitted inside a slightly bigger USB connector. this interface is needed because the ECU only knows serial communication and most currend computers only know USB. so the interface, and its driver, makes the jump to bring serial communication in a way that can be connected to an USB port. and sometimes you got 12V signals that could destroy USB, or the 5V maximum USB output wouldn't mean anything to the ECU so the interface do the level switch.
the USB OTG adapter is needed to tell the tablet or smartphone that it has to use it's USB host function. in general they would be "slaves" that need to talk to a "master". without master it doesn't work, so one hast to become it to handle the communication.

you're right, you could cut out the Rover connector and replace it with whatever you like. you can even fit the interface and OTG adapter directly and run a USB cable inside your car. if you never use factory like diagnosis thats no problem.

Thanks very much for your very helpful and informative advice, you have clarified things somewhat.
I've bought one of these off ebay item #371070035259, I trust that's right?

I think a USB socket on the dash would be great to view data on the go and useful in the event of a breakdown too.
Fingers crossed I'll wire it right

Thanks for your help

purely from the data it is not right as it only has 3.3V TTL level, and your ECU needs 5V TTL level. 5V TTL is not very common and more expensive.
but from my experience it works. i have one with a Prolific chip and 3.3V TTL and it works as reliable as my 5V TTL FTDI one. but the FTDI one cost a lot more than the Prolific one, so i tried it and didn't regret it.

Ahh gotcha.
I'll give it a whirl and see what happens, if not I'll try a 5v one, computers aren't really my strong point unfortunately, give me a pair of carbs and a mechanical distributer any day

Once again thanks for your help mate
