Location: Essex | Just incase anyone is interested in doing this, thought i'd put up a couple of pics.
you need to take perhaps a little less than 2mm from each end of the backing plate as shown A in the photo - easiest way is to measure the length of the backing plate difference between the metro + maestro pad.
the pad backing area B is, i think what Gareth Cole was talking about when he mentioned either grinding it down or the carrier down. you only have to take this material from two of the four pads if you choose to grind pad rather than carrier, as its only the inboard pads that will catch. i opted to grind the pad since i had to grind the two ends anyway. just make sure they're completely flush with the friction material and there shouldn't be any problems.
straight fit after that, i did notice they sweep a slightly larger amount of the rotor's surface - wouldn't say comparing the two that there is a huge increase in area, although when the pads begin the wear, the area will increase until the toe is all but worn away
