I brough the K reg Gti Mpi and the engine seems good, I have so far removed seats, and seatbelts, and will be doing the engine in the next two weeks. Is this a straight swap as when I brought the car it had no fob just a key for the central locking. What do I need to take with car to be able to use my 5as with it???

Cheers for any help/ advice I have a haynes but cannot really find this info.

Ps I will be scrapping the shell if any one is interested?? It needs to be gone by the 28th though.

I have been reading on various old threads regarding problems with the ecus etc when fitting a gti engine into a gta and wondered if anyone has done this conversion and has a heads up before I go ahead and my car doesnt work...

Cheers in advance

The problem is the alarm as well as the gti only has a key and no fob whilst the gta has the 5as. How would I get the 5as to work with the gti engine ??

Is this an R100 GTa that your putting the engine into?

If it is the easiest way is to change the engine along with the engine loom and ecu out of the GTi. This should then leave the 5AS working the locking. The ECU will be MEM's 1.6 so does not require a alarm ecu to operate even tho it is fitted with the 3AS currently in the GTi. Although a small amount of wiring to get the GTi coil working if the GTa is MPI...really need to know what GTa it is...

The other option if it is a R100 GTa MPi, is to leave the engine loom in place and just transplant the engine. The curen 1.4 GTa ecu will run the engine okay but would be worth looking for a later mems 1.9 at some point.

This is all dependent on which 'GTa' you have.

I have a 100 gta mpi, the gti looks like a mpi ( square air filter).

I want to keep the security as it is not a safe area and the gti doesnt have a fob, I do have an after market alarm also fitted but it works alongside the 5as so I have got a nice tight alarm system.

Ideally you need an ecu out of the bubble shaped 214 16v or 414 16v of the same age 96ish on
You will then need to get it matched up to your 5as unit.

There are some on ebay:

I do have an aftermarket alarm I could install instead if that could be done?? as the gti does not have a fob only a key which when used operates cl and car starts etc??

On another note how easy is it to fit new seat belts to driver and passenger as it seems like the plastic covering will not come off??
