i got my gti into my dads today to sort the head gasket and thermostat out, the head removed skimmed and block tested ect.. but as we were preparing the block surface we noticed severe pitting on the surface like we have never seen before on a K series and the corrosion is so bad it couldnt just be rubbed down, we gonna lash the head on anyway and see how she goes but i fear the water jacket is gonna p*ss out again, i hope its not gonna be a throwaway !!! look at the close up has ne 1 seen this bad before???

a high-res close-up would be more useful.

But I think your allright, maybe the block has been without a head for a while. But it doesn't look to bad, don't forget that this is exactly where a headgasket was designed for, fill any area the exists because the block doesn't match the head in some places.

Clean it as throughly as you can, use chemicals and/or metal brushes.

make sure you use the latest original rover head gasket set.

The only thing i can think it is so bad is that i think the head gasket had gone a long time before i got it because the thermostat was sabbotaged so the car would not warm up and hence not loose water, the water has been lying there eating the head away?

That's terrific, a sabbotage methode that saves the engine

Really the problem of a headgasketprob is that oil can enter the water-channel. If that happens the cooling ability is weakend until the point these is not enough cooling capcity and the engine heats up. There is no way, anyone can change the system in a way that an oil/water mixture can properly cool the engine.

If the engine never heated up, then your engine is 100% fine. You cought the gasket problem early before too much oil was spilled over into the water.

is there anything you could put that would withstand the heat and fill the holes?

From the pic i'd say it'll be fine but its a very low-res pic so hard to tell.
