Just when I thought I'd seen it all, yesterday morning as I drove to work I heard a buzzing from the fusebox with the lights on, thinking it may be the lights on buzzer (that's never worked) I pulled it out - still hear buzzing, so I felt about and grabbed the big red relay to feel it humming away, pulled it and no more buzzing, but no lights either.

I have no dim dip resistor as I pulled it out a year ago (because the whole idea seems a bit barking) and I've never had a problem.
I don't understand why this relay needs to be working since the car has a separate headlight relay anyway (the little yellow one) so can it he bypassed?

Not a massive problem in the grand scheme of things but I can't help thinking it spells impending doom

It's only a switching relay.
Only real purpose is to keep the stalks low-current.

My resistor is disconnected too with no problems.
Any hint of damp in car / fusebox, or signs of a leaky windscreen seal?
I've only had buzzing relays when there's been moisture in there.

Your spot on mate, its damp all right.

Couldn't work out why it still needed to be fitted to have the headlights work as normal but the power loops through it, so I pulled fuse 20 and bridged terminals 30- 87 on the relay

Studying the wiring diagram now shows every component isolated and the headlights function as normal, works a treat

Everything still works?
Including main beam and flasher?
Doesn't make sense to me...
surely at least one of them should pack in?!
Headlights only should be fine though.
Just got to work out where the moisture came from now!?!
