Hi all,

This is my fourth metro but my first Gti, collected her two weeks ago, has a 1.8 solid cam conversion (little bodged in, running wrong ecu etc.) but the bodywork is possibly the best ive ever seen.

Since ive had it ive

Replaced the downpipe
Replaced middle and backbox
Heat wrapped the entire exhaust system
Quick service with some iridium plugs
HID kit fitted
New radiator and twin fans
Replaced standard aerial with a smaller oem looking jobby
Aero-blades on the front
Changed nasty red washer piping with some black original stuff
New plates front and back (front was cut-down and just didnt look right)
Aluminium alternator pulley
Added a powdercoated bonnet catch (all the other bits are being done as and when)
Added monkey to my rear view mirror

Plans

Fit 1.8 ecu (change flywheel etc)
Change inlet
Get rid of FSE boost valve
Get rid of everything and anything candy red
Attack and sort out alarm wiring and stereo wiring as its a right rats nest
Try and make the bay a bit mor oem (some sort of mix between adrian and saltydog)
Mintex 1155 pads
Aluminium bottom pulley
Lots of clay, mopping / polishing and waxing
Some engine mods but no real need or cash to do it right now

Pics of when I picked her up

old radiator

new radiator and fans

wrapping the new downpipe, in the rain

Loving the plans you've got lined up, one in that condition should be treated well and it looks like it will be

Thanks for all the positive comments

Turley - im not quite sure what the radiator is off, valeo supplied it listing it as a diesel metro rad but it needed alot of cutting to get in so i very much doubt it was, i bought the fans from ebay, seller called top trades, really recommend them total doddle to fit and great quality for the money £45 posted for the pair !

Heres a before pictue of my engine bay, I dont like the red at all, as I said before I really like the OEM look, Im thinking over the lotus cam cover as I think it would look awesome but I think I should wait until I actually have vvc power

I had a parcel from a member, you know who you are and i love you!

bit of a clean (yes I think im turning into Pandy)

Fitted and test fit (more of a plonking in) of 25 airbox, some plain black washer pipe and de-stickering of the battery

Now im just trying to hunt down an idle control valve and hose, couple of brether hoses and throttle potentiometer and im away, won a 1.8 ecu on eBay, just awaiting delivery then I need to get it unlocked and hopefully Ill be ready for MGM, after a good wash anyway (me and the car )

ONLY get GENUINE ROVER caps for the expansion bottle. Those yellow ones have been known to cause problems.

For the price there isn't an excuse.

Well its been a while, but an awful lot has happened

After a fitting the 1.8 injectors and the vvc manifold it was alot faster, pulled better but smelt a little rich, had no problems for two weeks or so, then for no reason at all wouldnt start, after much messing about I found it was flooding itself, removed the fuel pump fuse and after a couple of turns it fired up no problem at all and ran for a worrying 30 seconds or so with no fuel

Decided that I was then going get rid of the GTi ECU straight away, as I had to get the gearbox out to change the flywheel and would have to do some sort of wiring conversion I thought I may as well go the whole hog and update right up to mems3, but seen as this was a fairly expensive task I thought lets pull out all the stops and proceeded to destroy my "sensible second car" fund.

So started by whipping off the head

Pulled out entire subframe

Removed engine and box

Had a slight accident getting off the fuel filter, was definately in need, check out the colour ofthe fuel that came out

Picked up a MGF subframe

Cleaned it up and removed the suspension, luckily its all in great condition and all of the bolts came out without ripping off the captive nuts

Also picked up a few goodies

Got the loom out and picked up a TF loom

Thanks to help from a top bloke Ive converted the mems 3 loom to work in my GTi

Removed the carpet from the engine bay as it was holding water and I didnt really care for it, no rust at all in all the usual areas, its had two very small patches on the front panel subframe mounts, but other than that theres only a 20p sized scab where someone self-tapped an the alarm siren to the bulkhead

Gave it a nice coat of underseal just to protect my investment, going to let it dry and slap on a good coat of some waterproof, saltproof and even godproof professional stonechip stuff ive got (just need to find it out )

Hopefully have it together very shortly, really need some help with the fuel pipe though as I dont really want to have to mount it vetically or join it so please ask anyone that may have one spare if theyre willing to sell up.

Turley - and you mate, I would come up sooner but this is my only car so im reduced to sponging lifts at the minute

Small update, fingers crosed everybody, I hopefully will have the engine in, head-on and timed up etc. hopefully running this weekend or monday at the latest, im still waiting on the head, got a liner that jumped up on me so Ive got to sort that, but the main thing stopping me getting the engine and box togehter and back in the frame is the plonkers I purchased my clutch from have still not dispatched it, hopefully have it here by tomorrow

Today I finished grinding the necessary mgf bits of the subframe as neat as I could, and brushed off all the surface rust, Ive also treated it to neutralise any microscopic rust in the pores of the metal, also given it two coats of red oxide primer, will probably treat it to a third tomorrow before hitting it with a black top coat

My freind also tack welded my sump baffle together today, no such luck tacking it into the sump though as theres just too much metal in the sump to get it hot enough without blowing the baffle to smitherines

treated frame

red oxided, delibrately missed the mounts as its standing on them in the garage and dont want primer all over the floor, well I dont mind, but someone always moans

Right....

Been a busy boy, thanks to Jonboy and James160 I now have fixed my fuel pipe problem, went to the local scrappy and now have a 200 bubble fuel filter outlet to fuel rail pipe to get me by until I find what im after.

Cleaned up my Janspeed manifold to remove the small amount of surface rust it had

Then gave it a few coats of VHT paint, hope my parents like that shade of silver as Ive avoided getting over spray on my car, but it magically seems to have given everything in the back garden a nice coating

Cleaned up the hydrocans and gave them a rust proofing coating same as the subframe

Gave them red oxide primer, then black topcoat, very happy with how they turned out

Finished the subframe

Got the alternator pulley off ready to swap with a Raplh item, have to highly recommend these beasts, standard weighs in at a HUGE 448g, not alot you say, yeah until the normal kitchen scales couldnt weigh Ralphs aluminium beauty had to crack out some of my moms weightwatcher ones, apparently its 58g and 2 sins LOL

Got the flywheel on to the engine, I did nearly hump it, its a peice of art not merely a flywheel

Who needs a clutch alignment tool??? 16mm 1/2' drive socket fits in the crank perfectly and two wraps of insulation tape make the clutch fit that perfectly quick_spider let me in on a beauty 9mm deep socket locks up the flywheel nicely long as you dont have a 2 pole flywheel with stupid square holes (like the gti )

Engine and PG1 in the subframe *note excellent use of zipties*

Also finally received my cylinder head, seems theres some sort of time distorsion north of the border Got to work port matching, I was surprised to find the inlet ports were pretty much smack on 40mm, but they wernt circular LOVELY ! Had as much as 2mm of material at the bottom which is actually a lump which can be removed to improve flow, left is done, right is standard

Also port matched the inlet manifold, both upper and lower halves, also blanked off the pipes that I dont require to avoid having lots of blanked off pipes making the bay look a mess.

After a superb Halfords c**k up with some sealant for my liners whch popped up, I had an arghument with the branch manager who offered me half price on some oil I had my eye on, 5w50 fully synthetic FTW !! Also now have gearbox oil, oil filter, fuel filter (later 100 type) Iridium plugs, head set (MLS) and bolts, cam belt kit (front and back) and brake fluid so hopefully im all ready , fingers crossed, to have it running this week

Been a very busy boy in between updates

Got a few more things recently, some free very thick heat wrap thanks to a very good freind of mine, new track rod ends, ball joints and wishbone bushes - massive thank you to quick_spider, itg maxogen kit from turley and pg1 starter from muzza, fuel pipe from Jon8oy - toatal lifesaver, also had my headset and cambelt kit turn up so I could really crack on

Stripped down the vvc head, was a little afraid at first but with the guides available by Dave Andrews and some advice from R119 GTA I was reassured and confident to sink my teeth into it

Found the timing on the vvc was messed up, when turning the vvc sycnc shaft so that the marks were aligned one side

The other side was then out , not much I know, but imbalance isnt going to help anything, evidence that either its supposed rover head gasket job was a poor one, or a monkey attacked it

Sorted the snapped fuel line with a compression fitting, not what I wanted to do, but it fits great and im confident itll do the job perfectly

Got the head to work, gave it a dam good clean up, opened up the exhaust ports to 39mm to match the Janspeed manifold, then got it on the CNC, measured it for flatness, was near perfect only 0.04mm distorsion accross the whole head surface, gave it a 0.30mm skim to try and compensate for the loss of compression from using the thicker MLS gasket

Exhaust ports

Cleaned all the cam ladder, cams and dis-assembled the vvc mech - found the roller bearings were covered in emusified oil so I hope theyre not going to rattle, I was surprised how simple the mech actually is considering what it achieves, word of warning - if you do disassemble the mech mark up everything and each peices rotation as the little square sliders will interchange and sit in several different directions but theyll sit funny / loose or tight and id imagine would probably screw up eventualy / quickly

Valaves going back in, had a fight with two of the collets for at least an hour, just did not want to go back in, lets just say im glad the house was empty as the swearing was constant for a good 20 minutes

Head all assembled, complete with all new gaskets and piper bp270 exhaust cam

Got the head back on, both timing belts fitted, most of the loom plugged in and inlet manifold, throttle body, fuel rail, breather pipes etc. on, in need of the lotus cam cover to tidy things up now, having trouble getting my mitts on one though

Got the sump off, cleaned it out and slapped my baffle in, then filled up the engine with a nice treat - 5w50 fully synthetic - happy days

Wrapped my Janspeed and got that in, was a right cow to wrap how I wanted

Made a alloy spacer washer for my alternator pulley as it had a slightly different offset to my original pulley, got the alternator back on the car, but have magically managed to loose the bottom bolt - clever me

Modifying my ECU holder tomorrow, then can mount my ecu and plug the remainder of my loom in. Currently having major trouble with my hubs, got one driveshaft out now after giving it some stick in the press at work, when I got the drivers side in the press though had upwards of 35 ton on it and it refused to move so I heated the whole thing up until what I think was all the bearing grease was smoking, still nothing with over 35 tons of pressure on it - what a swine ! Soon as I sort another hub and a coolant elbow I can hopefully get her started up

Small update - have finally got the drivers side driveshaft out of my hub WAAHHHOOOO !!! Seeing as I was about to buy a new one thought id go all out with the press and see what happened, the press is rated to 30ton, gauge goes to 40, took it just past 40 and the lever wouldnt move anymore, so did the proffesional thing and just swung on the lever, there was a huge bang I landed on my backside and luckily the driveshaft also hit the floor - scary yet hilarious ! Going to get both hubs, brakes, top arms and track rod ends on tonight, then just a few things left before it can be started up

Got the hubs on tonight, lathered (definately the word) copper grease onto the drive shaft to prevent a re-occurence of the past couple of days, got the top arms on, track rod ends on and brakes, going to sort wishbone bushes out tomorrow, then hopefully theres a snowball in hells chance it could be sitting on its very own suspension tomorrow hip, hip !

Been going in circles a little bit lately, got my wishbones off, looked like this (covered in waxoyl and road grime)

slapped into the solvent bath at work and TAADAA

Changed the bushes and ball joint, accidentally killed the drivers side wishbone so ive had to buy a new one from AKmotorsport, at a really decent price

Decided to take off my rocker cover, plenum, throttle body and HCU cover, so that Chris at TrackTeck could give them a lick of some very cool paint

Got that all back on and over the moon with how it looks, really smartened up the engine bay, especially now the throttle body doesn't poke you in the eye, if you'd like some of this lovely paintwork doing go ahead and drop Chris a line - ringrose187@hotmail.com

Made an aluminium plate so that my Gti ecu holder can keep the mems3 unit nice and safe

and on a tarty note, the middle seat belt has annoyed me from the day I've owned this car, as its always flopping about making the place look untidy, so I whipped that out and it looks a lot smarter now

Got my vvc coolant elbow today, looks like its going to be interesting to fit, but I have a small trick up my sleeve to solve that Have a few more goodies arriving tomorrow so might have another update sometime in the week, after my hubs have come back off but it is for a good reason

Also need to sort a small ecu plug again as I temporaliy donated mine to Myke24 as he was in a bit of a tight time spot, so even more work to redo

Watch this space

Its crinkle paint, apparently you paint it on and it looks normal, then you smack it in an autoclave for a while and boom ! It comes out with a sort of matt plastic-ish or flocked look to it. Id never heard of it before

Small update - had the front hubs off, gave them a bit of a tidy up and changed the bearings. Got the new wishbone on, refitted hubs tonight, got it sitting on its own suspension (well bumpstops for now). Hopefully when snail mail turns up tomorrow I can get on with getting the small ecu plug fitted, going to temporarily bodge the top hose as both our stainless welders are out of action at the minute :-( Got the ITG maxogen kit fitted though, still arguing with myself whether I should drill a huge hole in my front bumper for the cold air feed

Will get a picture update up over the bank holiday weekend

Small update

Got the engine running now, just waiting on the exhaust before its officially on the road, had a strange u-turn in the insurance battle between sky and flux, sky put the price up since my quote and adrian flux went down £300 woohhoo, so got all mods declared with 3 points for £730, which I was real happy with

Got new front bearings on both sides, gave the hubs a bit of a tidy up, now Ive only got a ball joint to change and tidy up the inside of the car and its all done. Got a few stainless bits so I can start with my good top pipe. Also sorted my fan wiring out so its all near invisible in the bay now and they are both ecu controlled as well as having the manual overide.

Got to say the flywheel seems to have made a huge difference to its responsiveness, only touched the throttle but it seemed to rev like a bike ! PG1 is well worth the upgrade just to use the bigger starter motor as it will happily crank the engine at a really respectable speed to prime the tappets with oil and I didnt even take the plugs out!!

Will get a picture up of how the bay looks with the ITG in, seem to have misplaced the pic...

Bit of an update Been very busy last few weeks getting all the little bits done, most exciting highlights being

A trip to lower a friends GTi, which turned out to be a beautiful find, very tidy car and condition for its age

Had a few wiring problems inside the car, somehow a section of wire beind the dash had broken down which stopped me starting it, eventually sorted it, fitted a supercharger too

Had a very busy couple of days and sort of forgot to bleed my brakes *face palm* so as I was already late, had to drive 20ish miles to powerflow with just the handbrake which was needless to say rather challenging and exciting, link pipe was made perfectly, then decided it would be best to go where every metro has been before

RAC were kind enough to come out within 15 mins and tow me home - guy that came out was a top bloke too, even invited me to a free track day

Then itsonlyme was up to his usual tricks of supplying top quality parts at awesome prices, so Ive equipped her with a pair of MGF rear cans, turned the front cones down a fair amount so im rocking 600psi on the front at a respectable ride height

Since ive fitted the new mystery radiator my top hose was a mish mash of metro / cortina / transit hoses, so I started making a decent top pipe

Then I attacked the speedo as finding the right cable has been either expensive or just too much of a bodge up, so ive made up a nice adapter which screws onto the PG1 speedo and lets the R65 speedo cable to push straight in, made the hole a little tighter than the top of the R65 speedo drive so that the o-rings really hold it in

Couldnt get the spark plugs out when I had the head apart so I had to wait until I managed to get it pretty hot, was horrified with the state of the plugs, needless to say idle and low down responsive really improved

Then after finishing all the little jobs decided to give it a little clean

Only problem is its fairly expensive, its all 304 stainless and 38-35 reducer hoses, properbly cost me about £40, so i dont think anyone would pay £50 for one :-/

Thanks everyone, very kind comments, no mate they were replaced 3-4 years ago, think all the work and paint was carried out by a superhero though, the finish is amazing, I still havnt managed to find where the panels are joined, if you look in the reflection in the side of the car its faultless, only give away is my rear bumper isnt straight, partially down to me missing the bottom brackets, waiting for a new set from akmotorsport

I normally use autoglym bumpercare which brings them up great, but Turley used Meguairs gold class trim detailer I think and its in a totaly different league !

Well sadly the majority of the goodies have gone engine & box are coming out tomorrow to make way for the new owners engine. The new owner is registered on here and i would imagine hes going to either update this or start a new thread.

Look out for my next project, will start a journal next week

This is now mine It was the only colour GTi I hadn't owned so it was rude not to.

Swapped my old GTi and a Saxo for the car minus the engine and Tom and the guys came over this Saturday to take his engine and box out and drop mine in, luckily we had fantastically warm weather and really picked a good day to do it. Thanks guys!

Spec is similar to before apart from I have a Type B lsd in a ZR box, standard Mems 3 VVC engine and a talon rad. I have also kept my Silverstone interior as I prefer it to the Lightening, might change it to full 'phase 2' spec once its fully up and running and the suspension has been adjusted back down to earth

Tom's turning the green one into more of a focussed track slag

Need to repaint the wheels as they are powdercoated but they look a bit greenish against the blueish grey of the car, will do some photoshopping and a poll to decide which colour to go for.

Been spending a bit of time cleaning this up before it goes back on the road (taking some time to transfer plates etc).

First up, the powdercoated wheels were more greenish grey than silver which can be seen in my photos above so re-sprayed them in a nice bright silver for a total cost of £3
(old on left new on right):

The silverstone interior from my Green GTi was encrusted in 19 year's worth of filth so I wet vacced the seats, here's the result from just one seat:

The header tank and washer bottle had a couple of trips to the dishwasher followed by some bleach then swilled with some fairy liquid, hot water and soya beans/rice which got rid of all the old crud:

Bought a brand new 52mm TB as I wrecked the one attached to the engine when pulling it out of the ZR:

Fitted a period-ish (date stamped 1994) Momo Corse steering wheel and a Momo knob:

Replaced the standard exhaust system with a Janspeed and I've had the pipework enlarged at Powerflow and mated to the 6 bolt downpipe which came from the ZR already de-catted with 2.5" pipework:

Mr Parker kindly sorted me some bits and bobs such as a red coilpack as it was running one standard and one red and also an ecu set with a 5AS that doesn't self arm so I can just use the nice clifford system The car runs really well now and starts on the button (When I remember where it is) Can't wait to use it!

Clayed the car and used some old Turtlewax extreme polish followed by some Poorboys Natty's Paste Carnauba Wax, really need some decent photos as these iPhone ones really don't do the car justice. Will crack the SLR out and get some better locations once its on the road:

And one with its Japanese friend:

Next job is to replace the cam seal and driveshaft seal to stop the minor oil leaks then it's red band rack and MGF ball joint time.

It was a nice day today so took some better pics, paintwork has been sealed followed by 2 coats of Poorboys Natty's blue wax, bumpers done with Chemical Guys new look trim gel and tyres treated to Meguiar's Endurance tyre gel.

Looks fantastic, very nice paintwork and location. Is the coolant level really low? In the engine bay pic looks asif it's seriously low.

Just a few updates on the old girl who turned 20 last month.

Thermostat housing had been overtightened at some point which was causing it to leak so JonBoy kindly donated one.

Failed its MOT on balljoints and emissions, fitted some MGF balljoints £11 each and a new Lambda sensor £35 job done.

The ECU fan wiring was causing some 'amusing' issues so Matt Parker kindly sorted that out for me so the car is now nearly niggle free which is good for a 20 year old Metro!

Oh and I need to take some decent pictures now my Compomotives are finished as documented in the gallery, thanks to everyone who contributed.

Interior Update

I've been trying to find a half leather silverstone interior for the past 12 months and it turns out they're pretty rare, I managed to cobble a set together that needed some remedial work, so here's a how to guide for anyone with half leathers.

By chance, the guy who I bought the Compomotives off asked me if I knew anyone who wanted some half leather front seats (which were out of a late GTi I sold him 5 years ago). I made a cheeky offer of £20 without seeing them and he brought them along when I met him for the wheels.
I found some matching rear seats for £20 from Geoff who had put his metro on a diet

The front seats had been sitting in a damp shed for 5 years and were covered in rank smelling mould, decades of B&H and numerous other dodgy stains. The leather was dry, cracked, stained and the grey had worn away on the bolsters. Luckily Geoff's rear seats were in excellent condition with only a few minor marks on the leather.

I spent about 3 hours wet vaccing the seats and doorcards using the following method.

1) Soak fabric with Vanish pre-wash spray
2) Agitate the fabric with a nail brush
3) Leave to marinate for an hour
4) Locate some upholstery cleaner - I used rug doctor carpet cleaner
5) Boil some water, mix in the cleaner and put it into your chosen wet vac - I use the plebby orange Vax
6) Start wet vaccing the fabric
7) Replenish the hot water & cleaner mix every 10 mins to keep it as effective as possible
8) Repeat until the water being sucked up is clear
9) If possible switch the water feed off and suck up as much moisture as possible
10) Leave to dry somewhere nice and warm - I used a couple of safely placed electric heaters and the full interior was dry and fresh within a few hours.

The leather required something more specialised than household products, I have found the perfect dye to match the grey used on the 90's Rover half leathers:

Some before shots:

Paint worn away

Scuffs

Filth

Firstly, the leather needed a good clean:

Getting there:

Started applying the dye with a sponge, neat on the very bad areas, 10% water on other areas:

50/50

After a few applications (each coat dries to a rubbery finish after about 5 mins):

A couple more coats and they're done:

I'm hoping that, with use the driver's bolster loses its slight flat area from storage, Not bad for £60 all in

This was the listing on eBay I purchased: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380438312694?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

It is the darker shade of Granite grey for the P38 Range Rover that you need, I have over half a bottle left if you need to try some? I guess you are a fair distance away though.
