don't know if it has been covered already, but i know there are 2 opinions if you can use a R65 with a VVC engine and if it will last.
maybe i can add some fuel

IIRC the R65 is basically a Peugeot MA gearbox. i never found any data from Rover or who ever made the box, but i found this about the MA box
http://www.peugeot-citroen-moteurs.fr/en-gb/our-products/Gearboxes/manual
Peugeot rates the MA box for engines with up to 160Nm of torque.
so if i got the data right all 1.8l K series engines are above this figure, 165Nm for the solid cam, 174Nm for the VVC. thats why Rover used the PG1, i guess.

but i won't say a R65 can not last. it is possible it will handle the torque, at least for some time. but you are using the safety margin

I would imagine the R65U box ( "U" for uprated) would be able to handle more torque than the standard R65 but not as much as the PG1.

When reading forum threads on the R65U vs PG1 there is always a bit of banter about which one is supposedly "better".

I think its down to the ease of installation of the R65U over the PG1 as well as finding the right gear ratios.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the MA boxes use the same internals as the standard R65 but the casing is different?

that depends on what they uprated. if it was only the differend crownwheel to diff fitting then no. with better bearings maybe a couple of Nm.

Peugeot gearboxes have at least a differend bellhousing, all boxes i know have the starter at the back, along the engine

I ran a R65 with a Surtrac lsd diff on a vvc for at least 8yrs with no problem, I then sold it, and afaik, its still working ok.
