The book states 75/80 oil which is eight quid per litre, but I can get 80/90 oil from Wilkos for 3.99 per litre. Anyone tried putting in 80/90? I suspect my gear oil is 23 years old so maybe ripe for changing.

I don't know if its cheaper but the Total MTF94 gearbox oil I use you can get at Peugeot dealers as its the stuff used for the 106 gearbox. but the gearbox only takes 1.6 liters or there abouts so you dont need a lot.

I used the stuff from Wilko's in my box about 3 years ago for about a year, and didn't feel or see any problems.

The MA box the r65 was developed from is a very picky box for oil, 75w80 non EP rated oil is a must for maximum life. Even 75w90 or extra pressure rated oil causes synchro problems with them in time so I can only assume the rover unit is the same even if they did some minor reengineering of the box for fitment in rover products.
That said if it does fail could you really put it down to the oil or just age and wear and tear? any oil is better than none but considering you don't need a lot it's worth going for the proper stuff

For all of your information I used to own a Proton Wira 1600 2001 and I replaced the 80/75 gearbox oil with Wilko's 90/80 and it was a disaster! It was during the winter and I found that during very cold weather I simply could not shift from 1st to 2nd gear when setting off for work and had to shift from 1st to 3rd for the first couple of minutes after which I could get into 2nd. I replaced the oil with 80/75 and back to normal - who'd have thought it? But it was true and so I'm now suspicious. I thought that gearbox oil was gearbox oil until then but now I'm more careful. Proton (and Mitsubishi) owners beware - but unlikely here. I'll just buy the right stuff and hope that my £16 investment will last the next 23 years like this stuff has.

Exactly may as well use the best you can afford as these boxes are supposed to be filled for life but we all know that no oil is going to last that long, wilkos stuff is probably fine the right application after all they will be buying it from a large manufacturer such as tetrosyl or Carlube anyway.
