I thought I had started a journal for this years ago, but I've done a search and it seems I didn't!
I bought it in 2005 knowing that it has a bit of a dodgy past. It was written off some time in '96 and was re-shelled a year or so after with a new shell. For some reason it was used very little between then and when I bought it so the total mileage is not much more than 10k.
Due to being stored the body has picked up a fair number of dents, but is totally rust free so it's not all bad!
Whoever did the re-shell made a poor job of it so after buying it I stripped it down and rebuilt it with all the correct bolts etc that were missing.
At the same time as doing this I fitted the following:
- GTI MPI suspension and brakes.
- GTI side skirts and interior.
- Spi 16v engine.
- Janspeed manifold and Piper exhaust

That's how it has stayed for the last 6 years and it probably covers 500 miles a year if I'm lucky. The only thing that's changed is a mouse has chewed a hole in the carpet so if anyone has a new or good 2nd carpet lay about let me know
I bought a 143vvc engine for it several years ago but getting married and gaining a son have got in the way of fitting it!
I'm determined to get the engine fitted for this summer so I have started stripping the old engine out and will soon be getting on with changing the head gasket etc on the VVC.
I've got some new wheels and individualising valves to fit at the same time
Below is a pic from a couple of years ago, but it hasn't changed at all since then. Also a pic of the current engine bay and test fit of a new wheel

Hopefully I will have an update to add fairly soon

I understand they are okay in the cold and fairly water tight. However I wouldn't know for sure as
it doesn't get used unless its dry and warm ish

I know it sounds appealing, but why would you want a fast cab? You can see nothing out the back with the hood down - I'd always like to know who is behind me before i put my foot down. Then again to a specialist insurer an engine swap is an engine swap, so for a few quid more premium you may as well go the whole way

Lovely looking car

Is it a Metro cabriolet registered later and with the 100 bumpers/lights etc or was it changed to Tahiti when it got the new shell?

I see where you are coming from with the engine upgrade. With the hood down you can't see much behind you that's for sure!
The 1.4 16v engine has plenty of power to have fun, and it will last for ever with the miles I do in it.
I was going to just convert this engine to MPI until I realised the amount of effort involved, and as I already have the vvc engine I
thought I might as well fit it.
Also I like that it will be fairly unique when completed. There are few cabriolets about and even fewer vvc ones

Its on an N-reg and from memory a 1995 so it's a Rover 100 rather than a metro. The original shell must have been white
going on the previous MOT's I have. Whoever did the re shell must have had the new shell painted Tahiti, I'm pretty sure it's not a
standard colour on cabriolets

I live in Aberdeen and my R100 Cab is a daily driver. It's absolutely fine! In fact some people think the Cab's are warmer in the winter as inside the hood there's a thick liner giving better insulation than the hard tops.
The only problem I have is if I park sidewards on a slope with the nearside higher than the offside the front passenger window leaks while I'm at work. Leaves a nice little puddle in the foot well by the time I get back to it.

With regards to making it fast, the floor's are re-enforced so wouldn't it make a decent track tool?

Overall I'm with Jason though, you don't see many about. I've owned various cars over the years including different GTI's and GTE's but non of them got the attention my Cab does. Parked at the traffic lights 4 weeks ago a guy in a Range Rover Sport next to me sounded his horn and wound down his window just to ask me what car it was. People approach me in car parks and ask if I had it converted myself!

Make sure you dry out your carpets and under lay insulation then or your floors will rot out!!!

Slight change of plans
I'm never going to finish the engine conversion this year, so rather than have it up on stands for the summer I've decided to get an MOT and use it!
I've changed the radiator from a nasty after market one to a genuine uni part one, fitted the new wheels and a K + N induction kit
For the first time in seven years it failed its MOT, but only on emissions fortunately. It's my own fault for forgetting the v5 from the donor GTI to prove its eligible for a non cat test
It's all sorted now and I had a nice drive back in the sun this afternoon
Still on the look out for a better carpet as it really let's it down
Here's a random pic taken during the re-test......

Still looking great mate, always been a fan of this car. Nice to see its still going too, theres been a few 1.8/vvc cabbys knocking around in the past but I think most are dead now as you just dont see them or threads on here

Looking as good as ever mate, although could do with clear side repeaters and a TF steering wheel

Thanks for the comments
I have the side repeaters i'm just too lazy and haven't fitted them!
I've wanted a steering wheel change for a while now, just not sure which is best and how to get the
horn to work with the F/TF wheel. Any pointers to assist with this?
Any other suggestions for future mods?

The TF ones are the nicest OEM wheel imo, you have to keep the horn ring off the 100 steering wheel and then rewire it but its not hard, just a case of wiring in the horn ring instead of it having a plug like the TF (i think).

Is the hood black on this? Tonneau would look good in black.

And finally sell it to me

The hood is the original grey colour, similar to the tonneau cover
Off to eBay I go to look for a TF wheel

No changes to this really, just been enjoying the recent good weather
Hopefully I will make some progress on the engine, interior or suspension over the winter but for now it's running well so I'm leaving it alone!
Quick pic of me showing the boy his destiny.....
