Hello All

Was always disapointed that the r100 never had a variable intermittent wipe like most mk2 and 3, so here was the solution,

Install Metro rear wash wipe switches,
Install Freelander/Disco/r800 stalks (feel much more quality)

Its far easier than it seems, especially if unlike me you dont mind cutting looms (I went a very long way to not touch the original loom). The A/C button controls the heated mirrors/washer jets.

Mods so far
Start with a basic diesel 5 door ascot and address the C/L, coolant tank and rotten tank/filler neck, the rust then go front to back,
Graphite bumper strips
Headlamp covers
Bosch fuel pump (for SVO)
Alternator with signal out.
MGF brakes
GTI MPI wheels
Front dampers (brackets welded in)
Front ARB
Smoked repeaters (r25)
Heated washer Jets
Electric/Heated mirrors
A/C switch to control jets and mirrors
Added metro rear wash wipe switches (I hate switch blanks)
Leather steering wheel with remote
MGF Mirror
Ultrasonic alarm
5AS dimming int light
Indicator flash on Alarm set/disarm
Friendly mobilise (it works!)
Diesel Tacho
R800 stalks
Wood door caps
Electric Windows
Levelling headlights
Leather interior (unfortunately apart from cards)
B and C pillar covers
Grey carpets (Ascots are an icky cream)
GTI rear cans
Mudflaps
Rear ARB
Towbar
Rover towbar electrics
Petrol exhaust heat guards (reduces interior noise)
GTI larger bore exhaust (standard, not showy at all, this is not a fast car)
Rebadged with Rover/115GSD badges
Spoiler
Dual Fog lights

Still to do

Sunroof wind deflector
Electric speedo
Heated seats

Edit :
New mods completed,
-Sunroof wind deflector
-Complete door wind deflectors
-EER 1098 relay fitted to make variable intermittent wipe work properly
-Poverty spec mirror cheaters fitted (no hole anymore)
-Leather handbrake and gaiter from MGF.
-MGF front cans

I am steadily amassing the bits for a mk3 GTi skirts, front end and rear.

In my mind, what rover should have built.

I have here all the kit to evacuate and pump up suspension, also I can program fobs and match ECU's on or off the car. I am Kettering shoould you need such things.

Cheers

Kev.

Nice! Where did you get a Jap spec Metro air con button? :o

Also put up some exterior photos. BTW, you can get R25/100 style heated seat switches but you have no space left.

Hi all,

Will do some outside stuff when I've cleaned it (should be very soon), not much to see mind. Rimmer bros still sell the aircon switch, think it was about 8 quid. I was going to do the honda switchgear mod as I already have a spare dash and all the bits required. That will free up a spot for the heated seat switch, cheers for the tip!

Didn't think the Bosch injection pump would fit in the metro, I got the feeling it would be too tall and foul the slam panel. Wouldn't mind seeing a picture of it in place. Do the Bosch pump engines feel any better to drive?

Here are the pics of the Bosch pump in. You have quite a bit of clearance to be fair, It even looks like the coolant bleed pipe was designed for it to fit in. Driving is not much different, its just a little easier starting. I left it running on the Lucas injectors which are fine (I used to be a Diesel engineer back when I had a career).

The Peugeot TUD5 engines came with two different injection pumps made by either Lucas or Bosch. I've no ideal what influenced which pump came on what engine but I do know metros only came with the Lucas variant. Allegedly the only difference between the two was the Bosch variant is more robust and can use biodiesel, whereas the Lucas pump will wear and eventually fail if used with biodiesel.
My mate seemed convinced that these engines came in two different power outputs which was influenced by which injection pump was fitted, the Bosch one being the more powerful but I'm not so sure now. My early R100 diesel doesn't have a CAT or EGR while my later R reg does so maybe that determines how much power it has.

Hiya,
My understanding (and experience) is that either lucas or Bosch can use biodiesel no problem. Only the Bosch pump can use unadulterated vegetable oil, which is what I run on at £1 a litre from Tesco. The pump here has done over 250,000 SVO miles in 4 different cars. The fuelling and therefore power can be very easily increased on the bosch pump using a 13mm spanner and a screwdriver. Best turn it back for MOT time though....

How do you adjust the fuelling on the Lucas pump? I once turned a screw which I thought was the fuel adjustment screw but it just made it sound worst and rattle a lot so I'm thinking that might have been the injection timing screw.

Unfortunately I think the fuelling adjustment on the lucas is internal. More reason to go Bosch! They seem to be in plentiful supply at the moment.

Complete set os wind deflectors arrives tomorrow, then i'll stick the external view up.

Cool, well I have a Bosch pump sat in the unit which I robbed from a scrap saxo so might have to fit it when the time comes.

So, I got bored. Then I went to a scrapyard and raided an r200 for pretty electrical bits. Then I did this...

All the wiring is unpluggable so it can return to standard control in about 20 mins.

So the current mod list is as follows..

Graphite bumper strips
Headlamp covers
Bosch fuel pump (for SVO)
Alternator with signal out.
MGF brakes
GTI MPI wheels
Front dampers (brackets welded in)
Front ARB
Smoked repeaters (r25)
Heated washer Jets
Electric/Heated mirrors
A/C switch to control jets and mirrors
Added metro rear wash wipe switches (I hate switch blanks)
Leather steering wheel with remote
MGF Mirror
Ultrasonic alarm
5AS dimming int light
Indicator flash on Alarm set/disarm
Friendly mobilise (it works!)
Diesel Tacho
R800 stalks
Wood door caps
Electric Windows
Levelling headlights
Leather interior (unfortunately apart from cards)
B and C pillar covers
Grey carpets (Ascots are an icky cream)
GTI rear cans
Mudflaps
Rear ARB
Towbar
Rover towbar electrics
Petrol exhaust heat guards (reduces interior noise)
GTI larger bore exhaust (standard, not showy at all, this is not a fast car)
Rebadged with Rover/115GSD badges
Spoiler
Dual Fog lights
-Sunroof wind deflector
-Heated seats
-Sunroof wind deflector
-Complete door wind deflectors
-EER 1098 relay fitted to make variable intermittent wipe work properly
-Poverty spec mirror cheaters fitted (no hole anymore)
-Leather handbrake and gaiter from MGF.
-MGF front cans

New mods -

Most electrics controlled by lucas 23vt unit with r 200 switches. This does the following
-Control of rear wiper
-Rear wipe on engagement of reverse with wipers on
-Maintain window power for 3 mins or until front door is opened
-soft foglight and HRW control. No HRW until engine is running and turns off after 20 mins.
-immobilised warning tone.
-Heated seats controlled by r200 style switch
-Immobiliser lamp moved to centre of binnacle
-Metro rear was wipe switches fitted with brighter bulbs to match r200 switches.
-Transfer of LOA to 23VT because it has a less irritating tone.
Other mods
-Extra padding under carpet to reduce road noise
-GTI body coloured sill covers
-GTI body coloured rear spats
-Reverse sensors/warning.

Still got to have a play with an electric speedo. Would have done it earlier but the drive access in a diesel is shockingly bad.

that is a very impressive list of mods. especially like the electric and insulating mods. they must really bring the car "up to date"

I think Rover 200 illuminated ignition barrel should be on there and twin boot lights? Interesting mods. Which kit did you use for heated seats?

I agree with the ignition barrel, I did get one from a 200, 400 and a freelander to dissect and see if I could see how it could be done neatly. In short I couldn't. The metro doesn't even share the same profile key with the rest of rover cars of the same age and space is limited within the cowling. If an earlier car (Meastro/montego etc) had this function it may have been possible at a guess. If anybody has managed this, let me know how! I do however agree with the second boot light and so it shall be done.

Doing all these mods has shown how very different electrically it was from the rest of the fleet at the time. Getting all the relays and wiper park functions to go from negatively switched to positively switched took quite some thinking.

Seat kit was the cheapest I could find on ebay. I will see how long it lasts.

Someone on here did it with a cigarette socket surround dissected. Ill see if I can find the thread.

Thats an impressive list of extras, think thats every parts bin OEM rover extra fitted.
Do your rear wiper bottoms work, i was tempted to put the 800 stalks in and wire the switchs up but you lose the rear wiper switch on the stalk as i think all th 800 had switchs like the metro for it.

I looked in to the illuminated ignition barrel but decided it was worth it, the mk1 r800 was closest. The maestro montego all have the same lock as the metro/100 with out. Pretty sure the lock is 100% the same on the three MMM cars.

One of my favourite mods on the mk3 metro was illuminated stalks from the LDV 200 vans. Rover deleted the fibre optics but LDV didn't s its a simple retrofit and in the correct orange illumination.

Totally agree alot of these parts should of been fitted from the factory, mainly the flashing indicators and steering wheel remote.

The rear wipers work fine off the switches, that was the easy bit. You need a EER 1098 relay from an LDV van to make the intermittent function do anything significant. My Vanden Plas has the light up stalks, which are very nice in the dark. Seems If the VP has something, I'm not too bothered about putting it on the diesel. I don't think it would suit chrome handles and locks anyway.
