Right thought I would start a thread about my metro turbo

Had it about 12 years now! Last ion the road in 2004 dry stored since then

Some will know I have my own garage and I restore and modify classic Fords but that's not to say I don't like other cars

My Metro is like part of my family, I never plan on selling it and want to fully restore it in a few years time, but last week I looked at it and thought well why don't I use it

So the plan drag it out get it running, service brakes, good going over and mot it and use it then I can restore it later on.

It's so solid and rot free as far as these go and has had no welding so far the paint has suffered but all in good time with a genuine 79k on the clock engine is good too
It was drenched in wd40 before I laid it up too

I got it out got it up on stands and pressure washed the hell out of it first off then it was carb off for a clean, new fuel pump fitted tank drained and new fuel, cooling system stripped and flushed out, new thermostat fitted

New battery and leads, new cap, rotor and plugs new oil and filter etc and got it running

Pumped wax oil everywhere for protection

One to wet ya lips when i dragged it out of storage

I had a circlip missing off the inner cv, so I removed and rebuilt the drive shaft, fitted the clip, then replaced both ball joints and the wheel bearing

Before xmas I decided even though it needs a re paint which i"m not doing this year, I would freshen some bits up, so I stripped the back end down for a deep clean

So I started by Blowing the crap off with the airline then some 3m compound and decent wax to follow

Washed the light lenses before compounding them with the polisher also properly cleaned the light units in and out

Cleaned bumper inside and out, no plate lamp, boot shut, rubbers and glass, this is the result

Next i got these On order:

A new Carb
Fuel pressure regulator
Glass fuel filter
Inline liquid filled pressure gauge
A new ECU

so I decided to investigate the damp carpet, Heater Matrix

So I removed it, which was a bit of a mission!

Gave it to a good Friend of mine Dave from Radicool, to refurbish, fit new seals and test for me Dave was recently on TV with Mike brewer for wheeler dealers.

Anyway a pic of the grot!

While I was waiting on mechanical parts to arrive i got to work cleaning the front up

The headlights were shot to bits, so out they came, then it was a front end clean and polish, followed by lashings of waxoyl to keep it good.

the old lamps

Filth

The oil cooler mounting had broke and was cable tied so i fitted a new rubber mount

Thats better! CLEAN

Waxoil lots of it!

I decided the new headlamps were ok but not clean enough so i stripped them down

All cleaned and polished, I also removed the orange filters and fitted chrome orange bulbs for a cleaner look

And some led sides

No I'm not polishing the bonnet, it's fooked!

very nice looking turbo you have there!

I have never been able to take any of the a-series headlamps apart without breaking the glass, how did you do that?

I have the same type of heater in my 998 a-series, and I changed to two o-rings where the metal pipe is connected to the heater element without removing the heater, that was also a hard job, but doable!

I have my mate sorting the matrix as it wasn't just the o rings on mine sadly

Oh the headlamps, heat gun and a plastic wedge tool, heat up all round the edge for about 5 minutes then slowly prize them apart heating as you go, i stripped 4 and all came apart easy

I have just posted in technical regarding other problems i have with the car.

Right a little update

Had the head checked, then I removed the valves and re-lapped them in, new stem seals fitted
a new water pump and belt, new gaskets for the top end inc a new thermostat housing.

Wound her over then connected the king lead and she fired first time

Sung every verse in the chorus, I'm over the moon, had a little drive in the yard let her run for about 40 mins, checked timing and co etc.

According to the haynes manual, I should let it cool overnight then loosen the head bolts 1/2 a turn and re torque them????

I don't like the sound of that? what do you guys think?

Anyway a few pics

And one with a few resto's for customers i'm currently doing

Little update

I ben getting the car ready for an mot I had already fitted new bearing and top and bottom ball joints to the drivers side, but the driveshaft seals were leaking so the car has sat for weeks!

Anyway this week I got some time to get back on it and order some parts so I bought new

Drive shaft seals
gear linkage seal kit
2x balljoints
Wheel bearing kit
CV Boots

And set to work What a curse word of a job! nothing like the drivers side the ball joints were seized solid so I had to get the grinder out chop chop cut cut and the hub was off!

And one with all the new bits on it

Then I had to deal with the two tapered bits stuck in the suspension arms, what a ball ache but got them out in the end!

Like this resto a lot! My Dad's 1300 MG is the same colour, should have a meet sometime.

What seats have you got in it? Hope it passes the MOT!
