Hi guys,

My name is Mike. My wife and I have owned our L reg Metro 1.4Si 5 door for the last 17 years. It has had a couple of head gaskets done over that time (one recently), one rear door replaced after somebody tried to break in, and both rear arches replaced.

Recently, it became obvious that the car was becoming to submit to the dreaded rust, but the wife decided that she really wanted it, so I put my V8 Cortina project on hold, and am now doing a minor restoration. Currently the rear subframe and fuel tank are out, and I am sorting out all the rust at the back, which is where most of it is.

We are planning on keeping it standard for the most part, though the suspension is getting individualised, lowered slightly, and pumped up to 400psi.

Mike.

There are a few photos on my website, showing some of the work we have done in the past.

http://www.mk5cortinaestate.co.uk/metro/

The first one on the page is the replacement of the rear passenger side door, after somebody tried breaking into the car by folding the window frame out sideways. Unfortunately we had a colour match issue, which I haven't got round to sorting yet. It looks worse in the photo than real life though.

The next repair was to a hole that I found under the rear passenger side light whilst doing something else on the car.

Next is both rear arches, done a year apart. At the time, I didn't bother repairing the inner arches, as I was only intending to keep it going a couple more years. Of course, we are now doing a minor restoration, so those will be redone at the same time as the rest of the repairs.

After that there is a rather large hole that appeared under the drivers feet. The repair is pretty good, but the jacking point isn't in brilliant condition, so I will be replacing that this time round too.

Lastly, there is the last head gasket change. That went pretty badly, leaving the whole engine filled with something that ressembled cake mixture.

I will try to get round to putting photos on there of the work I am doing soon.

Hope you enjoy! Oh, and if you get board, just click on the link at the bottom of the page to see the Cortina.

looks like some nice work there. That's an unusual car, is it Caribbean blue?

Dread to think how many 'tros have disappeared in the 17 years you've owned yours

Welcome mate. Nice to see a nice 5dr being saved.

Be good if you start a proper MP journal though
