Really like this car! Would be great if you could get it to PoL for us all to have a look round.

Well its been a few months since i posted about my car. I moved the car to the garage at my house in september and its sat there untouched until a couple of weeks ago.
My wideband has been showing up a voltage fault. So i decided to was swap the battery from the boot and fit the new one under the seat to reduce the lenght of the cables.

I went with a odyssey p680. I still can't get over how small the new battery is compared to my old one and its more powerful.

it fits nicely under the passenger seat.

I have also been repairing some leaks on the slip joints on my exhaust manifold and some odd jobs to get the car ready for its m.o.t. I should hopefully have the car on the road in the next week or two if everything goes right!

6.8kg, just under half the weight of a standard one
Can't find a price on one though, plus not sure what the insurers would say

Yeah, might be up for POL. When is it?
I got my battery of ebay. It was £90 and my insurer was ok with it!

I just fitted one of these to a Caterham. It's a third of the size of the new one your using. Only weighs 1KG!!!! Unbelievable!!!

A customer supplied it. I believe it was around £250. It's starts a tuned up 1800 k series fine.

There is a guy that competes in the Sprints and Hills in Scotland and Northern England who uses and supplies the Lithium Batteries. He uses them in his 400bhp Evo powered mini and there are a few guys replacing there odessey units with them.

yeah, i know that guy. His name is alan mcdonald and he live in my town.

Well good news the metro passed its MOT and is taxed and insured.
Now for the bad news. After a couple of days of running the lifters were getting very noisy and then the idle went really lean all of a sudden. So i decided to adjust the lifter. Its a pain in the arse job taking over an hour to do adjust all measure, adjust and measure again. When i took the belt cover off i was meet by this:

one of the bolts on the exhaust cam pulley has come out and it has turned to full advanced. So that explains why the idle went lean al of a sudden. I think i have been lucky and the valves haven't hit the pistons.
Next job is to sort the valve clearances:

I have newman adjustable cam followers. They have a screw with a lock nut:

anybody that has had to do solid lifter followers will agree with me that this job it a pain. You have to measure the clearance, remove the cam ladder and cams, adjust each follower, then re fit cams and cam ladder, then re torque everything and the process starts all over again. HOURS OFF FUN!!!! :nono:
Newman give you this tool so you don't squash the follower when adjusting it:

but after a couple of days and several attempts the spacing was still all over the shop. I then found out the lock nuts on all the followers were stripped.
So i spent today making my own adjusters out of hardened grub screws:

and i made myself an adjustment tool too:

I'm hoping to have the car up and running again by the end of the week. I have the car booked into the dyno on the 10th of april for final mapping and hopefully a power figure providing the is no more miss haps!

I looked into lithium race batteries for the electronic reverse on my mini. Now they are tiny! ...but are not good at cold temps

Well, as usual its been a event full few weeks. My followers have worked and the engine is running quietly. I had noticed that when the cam pulley bolt cam out it had damaged the cam belt so i decided to change it just to be safe:

the car had started to over heat when sitting so i replaced the remote thermostat for a geniune landrover one which fixed the over heating:

So wednesday came and i set of for jdm dyno in carlisle. About 25 miles into my journey i noticed the car filling with smoke. I pulled of in to the services and checked. The crankshaft rear oil seal had decided to come out. So i put all the oil i had in the engine and headed home. :(

I stripped the gearbox out and confirmed the seal was out. Being wednesday night i wasn't sure i was going to get the car ready for POL. I ordered a new seal from rimmer bros next day delivery and set about doing other jobs for to get the car looking good for POL.
I painted my wheels:

I noticed the header tank sight glass had been leaking so i fixed it and gave it a coat of paint:

I am making my own airbox up where the battery tray is so i make the oil catch can smaller:

I had noticed my speedo had stopped working. I didn't have to look far to find the problem:

The speedo drive gear in the box has teeth missing and has knackered the sender gear. I will have to strip the diff out and change the speedo gear! :nono:

The seal came friday afternoon and i managed to get the car back together at 1am on saturday morning and left at 5am for POL. The car ran the 500 mile journey without a problem! Was well worth the push to get the car finished and down to POL!

Car is booked in to the dyno on wednesday the 24th april. If all goes well i get the the final mapping done and a power firgue! Fingers croosed!

Lovely, but not a sleeper really with the wheels. Could get a set of split rims done, smaller wheel but the wheels done so they look stock or like steelies .

Yeah, i know what you mean, but the car was a sleeper for the 4 years before i done the latest mods to it. I really didn't want to go down the route of bigger wheels but i had to fit bigger wheels to fit bigger brakes. The car was struggling with the old set up on track and i have upped the power again! I still see the car as a sleeper because people don't expect it to be as quick as it is!

Well its been a while since my last update. A couple days after getting back from POL the car stopped charging. The signal wire from the alternator had snapped at the connector. Once that was repaired the drove for a day then all of a sudden the car went lean on part throttle but would idle fine. For the next month the problem aluded me. I fitted coil packs:

Checked compression:

After that I checked fuel supply, fuel pump, timing, all the sensors, throttle cable, wiring loom, fuel map but they were all fine. By chance I found it and after all that it turned out it was the bolt for the linkage between the throttle bodies had come loose. Only took me a month to find it! :nono:

After that I made a blank for the cam sensor:

And after my mishap with my oil cooler sandwich plate snapping off and setting my car on fire. I extended the bolt:

I noticed my throttle bodies had a slight air leak from the spindle. So I decided to machine grooves into them to fit o rings:

I found an old photo of the engine bay I took the day I got the car. It looks quite a bit different now.
Six years ago:

Now:

I have a plan to make my suspension fully adjustable.I also need to remove the damaged speedo gear in the gearbox and fit a new one. I will need to replace the brand new speedo drive that got damaged too and I have new seats to fit.
My plans for the car this year are to get under a minute lap at knockhill while road legal and aim for a 13 second or better quater mile while road legal. Will need to get my finger out!

I have a BMC carbon filter on it. I was going to box it in but I couldn't bring myself to hide it!
