hi rob, look under the car at the corresponding side that has gone down, look at the front unit to see if theres and leakage it will look like a nuclear colour and smell of antifreeze, look round the eals of the unit and also the connecting pipes which run down the car, theres one unit at the front and one at the back (they are connected)
if its a rip in the pipe = new pipe
leak in the unit= new unit, new unit = £200 or you can get them from a scrap metro for about £15, let us know what car you got as cars with 185 wheels as standard need special units on the rear

I've just had this problem, look at the rear where the pipe folds back and goes over(on top of) the unit and check to see that it has not been crushed by the weight of the car.. your best bet to find a leak is to repressurise the system and listen for hissing..

ben

PS- bub: should i get those uprated rear units if i'm running 14's on 195 tyres?

the cars with 185s, the gti and the gta, came with these uprated hydrogas units, i think they have a different damping rate or something.. i just know i wouldnt buy stock replacements for my gti.. but for you running just bigger wheels, i wouldnt know, id probably upgrade them anyway, but i dont actually know the pros and cons to not running them and running them with just bigger wheels.

Thanks very much for the reply, it is a 1995 metro Si??? does this mean i need different units?? under the car there is allot of 'gunk' on one side near the pipe??? and not on the other side... my problem being, the car has not tax and no MOT so i have to fix it, drive to the MOT centre and have it pumped up there , I'll get it on a jack this weekend and have a good eyeball, ill tell you how it goes as im sure more help will be needed lol ..

Cheers

Rob,

si doesnt come with 185 wheels i dont think? what side and front or back? sounds like the pipe has split can you see the split? might need a new pipe then rather than a whole unit, lift it up yourself and you should see where the split is and what part you will need..

good luck

Si also has 185s, its basicaly a GTa without alloys.

So fitting a rear subframe of a non GTi Model to a GTi is unadvised?
Is it worth me fitting GTi units to my 1.1?
