Elite Veteran Posts: 978 Location: Walderslade, Kent | My partner whacked the curb after the brakes locked in the wet in my road (its a close). Side on, completely distorted the shell, one second everything was the fine, the next we were heading towards somebodys living room at 25mph. Front is fully distorted and pushed 2 inches to the left, the floors and pillar is bent to It will need jigging out if we decide it's worth fixing Edited by mini-mad-craig 11/11/2012 1:55 AM

The front subframe is definitely not the shape it should be and the windscreen breaking kinda indicates how much the body has flexed Edited by Pietaster 11/11/2012 3:09 AM

Elite Veteran Posts: 925 Location: Thinking of vvc'ing my Roadster Brabus :-) | If that was me I wouldn't mess about re-jigging it, (unless you have the right contacts), I would find a decent shell and re-shell it, It would give you the chance to give it a good rust-proofing and check anything else that may have been effected. That Mini scrap yard that was on the tv ,'Classic Car Rescue' looked like a good place, (maybe thats what they should've done, instead of 'restoring it'). Basically, by the time you have got it to a rolling chassis stage, (you know, powder coated s/frames, new brake/fuel,lines, steering rack and hubs, you are nearly there, as the interior and wiring will be ok. In the long run, it will be better than going through the insurance as it will end up on the register, and will be worth less as a total loss, and it will also effect any other car insurance premiums you have as you have to declare ANY insurance claims to your Broker.

Elite Veteran Posts: 978 Location: Walderslade, Kent | Thanks for the kind messages guys. Of course reshelling is an option, and it would mean there would be scope for an even better shell to be sourced (this one has rusty bits here and there and oversills) But it's the car which is special to us, its the shell, and reshelling it, whilst it could remain R195 NUF doesnt leave a lot left of the little car we both love so much it's just the same reg slapped on a completely different car What do you guys think creates the personality of a car? The regestration and identity or soul within the shell?

Elite Veteran Posts: 978 Location: Walderslade, Kent | Not to me, sure you could replace with it an identicle red and white Cooper shell but its not the same car is it. It depends how sentimental you are I guess. It's the same reason I'm juggling a Rover 114 about which is £2000 more expensive for me to insure than a rover 100 because I dont want to get rid of it because it's my first car About £6000 unpainted Edited by mini-mad-craig 18/11/2012 11:36 PM

Elf eating dog breeder Posts: 10531 Location: Guildford | I get what you mean about the shell, but for me its not the shell, its more the memories, hence why whenever I get in a metro im happy, cause it reminds me of all the stupid shit ive done in them, doesnt matter if its "THE" first, last, second, third, metro ever, but its the memories you assosciate with them... Then again, I do regret selling my first metro (first car ever) so much, hence why I wont sell my second metro (which wasnt my 2nd car...)

drive it like its hired | If its bent after subframe impact you would easily bend it straight learn to drive/ go to the gym/ fit a steering wheel bigger than 6 inches/ leave standard offset wheels on next time

Expert Posts: 3783 Location: Studley, Warwickshire | I was quoted £750 to jig a VW lupo that I'd bought to repair so I guess that's the sort of price you're looking at - I'm sure it could be straightened out easily enough. I don't think breaking it for spares would yeild enough cash and a second hand rust free shell would be impossible plus £1500 + to respray it. It may be worth wacking it on eBay as it is, I got £2000 for an extremely rotten sportspack cooper - so rotten the dash rail had detatrched from the scuttle!

Elite Veteran Posts: 978 Location: Walderslade, Kent | petrol_head - 19/11/2012 10:47 PM If its bent after subframe impact you would easily bend it straight learn to drive/ go to the gym/ fit a steering wheel bigger than 6 inches/ leave standard offset wheels on next time The steering wheel is a standard MPI one and theres a set of 10's waiting to go on in the garage, or there was before it got bent. And the learn to drive thing I cant really comment It's the first accident we've both been involved in, never thought it'd happen... heard the stories but I guess it only becomes truly real once you've experienced it... learn by doing I guess Thanks for the support and guidance guys. I think jigging is going to be more trouble and money than it's worth really, and neither of us are in a time in our lives where juggling another car about whilst trying to be insured on a daily, pouring money into that and insurance as 18 year olds is viable or sensible. It will probably be broken for spares Either that or as Jim suggests, whack it on ebay as is. Just be tottally honest on the listing and hope somebody with more time on their hands and the equiptment to sort her out gets hold of it Edited by mini-mad-craig 20/11/2012 3:02 PM
