Time to start a journal for my mk2 turbo.

When I purchased and picked her up she had been sitting in dry storage for about 4 years. The seller had managed to get her running and so I was able to take her for a test drive.

Even climbimg into the drivers seat brought memories flooding back. On the road test (with the suspension mostly flat) the turbo boost was strong and smooth but the clutch was slipping. The brakes worked well cvs are click free. She was still going to need some work but purchased her knowing that there are not many left here in New Zealand.

Here she is the day we got her home.

Gotta love a turbo that's ended up 12000 miles from 'home'!!
When it's finished, can you pop round my mates...
convince her to ditch the Hyundai and get an MG Metro?!! lol

Sunroof, exhaust backbox, and rear window rubber aren't original...
but expect local new parts are rarer than hens teeth!?! (or kiwi teeth!?)

Thanks Marv_666, I have spent a lot of time looking for sunroof drains to unblock that apparently she doesn't have. I will now stop looking. She has had a light rear ender at some stage, so that may explain the window rubber.
I'll upload pictures of the contents of the glove box shortly.

Can anyone tell me how much the mk2 has in common with the MGF? (We have plenty of them being parted out here)

Cool! Nice bit of history you have there.
Wish mine had that so I could get replicas of the original dealer plates!

Wouldn't mind reading the "perforation corrosion warranty" bit...
could do with a laugh while mine is being welded up!!

I picked up this recently, it has no motor and a lot of rust. It is still alive on our NZ vehicle licensing system.

I really only got it for the left headlight, so will be parting it out eventually.

Update, the red shell is stripped out. It has had some rust repairs in the past that will obviously need to be done again. For some reason all the rust is on the passenger side only.

The velvetty 'Turbo' lettering and stripe had been worn out/removed/torn off. I have had the Turbo embroidered and the stripe stitched on. This is only version one, before all of the seats will get the treatment. I have been unable to locate the material originally used for this trim so have gone in this direction. What are your thoughts?

Local spares are easy enough to get hold of, one or two suppliers here - including us.

Who are the other suppliers Andy? The Mini specialists I have tried have not been very helpful so far....

Passenger door jam is fixed. Still not sure about the floor as the metal is very thin.

It's been a bit quiet around here on Mk2 Turbo front, but we are coming into our summer so should be able to get more time with her....

I picked up my radiator and heater core from the specialists this week. The heater core needed the pipes rebuilt, and was given a hearty flush.

As for the radiator, I had three of them and only one of them was any good. The one that was revived had both tanks off, received a thorough clean and received two new tank O-rings. I am not really thrilled with the condition of the finning as it appears to be rotting. It's a two core unit which I am not sure if it is suitable for the Turbo application - (the other two I had were single core style, of which I have kept the tanks from). Hopefully there are some Metsperts on here than can shed some light on that for me......Otherwise I will tentatively use this one for the time being and then look into my options.

Great work! I just found out myself that Ralph on here sells the gaskets brand new for the heater blower. Stop leaks for good! Also a tip is to take them apart and re-seal them with silicone down the middle.

Yes, I had to completely dismantle the seat and foam inserts. I then took the seat backing to our local computerised embroidery place to get the turbo done. They were able to match the colour and style, there was a setup fee on this, though this is only for the first one . The striping was purchased from Spot Light, a craft type store here in NZ. My friendly motor trimmer stitched this on for me. I then re assembled the seat using wire ring/clip things with the appropriate tool on loan from the trimmer.

I had to make up some special brackets to retain the plastic guides that hold the head rest. These were already broken when I dismantled the seat.

I will take some detailed pics etc, when I do the next one.
