I was working on the metro advantage and on jacking up the front wheel passenger side I found some play in it. As the play was top and bottom and not side to side I suspected the top and bottom ball joints. I replaced these and while I had it apart I also replaced the wheel bearing and assembled it back together. Put on the wheel and it is still the same it wobbles from top and bottom but not side to side I am now at a loss as what it could be, I can see no movement anywhere else just the wheel wobbles, it is like the nuts are loose but obviously are not.

Also the car is cherry red and I have a couple of places to touch up does anyone know the code or where I can find it on the car.

Colour code will be on the VIN plate on the slam panel, 3 letters.
Can you get under the front while someone else wobbles the wheel?
If ball-joints and bearing are ok, could be the suspension arm bushes? (Assuming you fitted Mk2 balljoints, not Mk1?)
Something is obviously not right, movement has to be coming from somewhere noticeable!?

Thanks for the info on the paint. I tried what you said and got a mate to wobble the wheel while I looked underneath and now I am baffled as he tries to move it from side to side and it's solid, then he tries top and bottom it wobbles there is no movement at all in the bushes or ball joints, the only movement I can see is on the CV joint rubber as the movement is transferred to the shaft. It can't be bearings as it would move side to side, it can't be ball joints so no idea what it is.

Is this Chris Cooper's old Advantage you've recently bought?

Where in the country are you?
Might be someone local who can have a look for you.

(Should add your location via the 'Control panel', top right.)

No it's not that advantage I bought it in 2007 from a guy in Oxford for my daughter and been repairing it ever since, it was featured on Top Gear, well I say featured Clarkson was filming somewhere in Oxfordshire and it was in the background. It is now located in Leicester and this edition is very rare according to How Many only seven on the road, I know of five , three red and two green there are probably more as I don't think How many is that accurate but there can't be many.

I would have thought if there was a problem with the wheel bearing it would also rock side to side as well as up and down.

Get someone to put there foot on the brake and see if the movement goes. If it does it will be in the bearing or the hub nut not torqued up correctly

Well found the problem to be wheel bearings or should I say c**p SKF which I got from a motor factor and have always assumed to be one of the best. While I was trying to solve the problem I ordered some new old stock QH ones off EBay. Today I had another go with the SKF bearings, flat washer, then split collar up to torgue and beyond to the split pin and again wobbly wheel. I then dismantled it all knocked out the SKF ones and fitted the QH ones which had the now rare Made in England etched on them, same procedure and guess what no more wobbly wheel. I remember having the same problem with a rear wheel bearing it said continental on the box, the good old German tyre logo, so I assumed they must be German made bearings, it wasn't till they rumbled 6 months later and knocking them out tracked the number down to a Chinese company, again I used new old stock and no trouble since.
