How have people gone about doing this other than buying a rolling tool at 80 quid I need to roll the inner lip of the rear arches and I don't fancy attacking it with a hammer

You could make your own arch roller...

I know its for a V dub one but you get the general idea and my donor mgf had a jack the same style as the one in the guide.

Place a piece of scafolding tube between the car and arch and roll the car forward the car will roll the tube along the arch keep rolling the tube through till you roll it out to your needs it's a hilly billy way of doing it but saves £80 and gets you the same results

I did this with a hard plastic tube, heat the arches first with a heat gun so the paint is softer, less likelihood of paimt cracking.
