Just thought i'd start a little thread about what's going on with my car since i'm currently preparing it for MGM on the 2nd. I've started the cleaning already, since i'm going to be working quite a bit too. Got loads of new cleaning stuff ready to use so this thread will be full of pics of a nice clean car Some of the pics are from my phone so the quality might be a bit lower than usual.

Here's a pic of the car when i got back from Uni, sat lower than usual:

Just for fun.
Onto the preperations:

Interior
First of all, all the mats in the car were removed and scrubbed clean with a soapy water mixture, then washed off with a hose and left to dry. They look as good as new now. I also vacuumed the entire interior out:

and then used Strawberry scented cleaning spray. I sprayed almost everything except for the wheel and pedals due to the slippy surfaces. Once i was done spraying and ready for polishing, the car was full of a smelly strawberry mist so i left that to go away before i buffed clean every single surface possible (even did the seatbelt holders.... )

Having sorted all of the interior, i moved onto the

Wheels
In my cleaning equipment i had bought an alloy wheel cleaning kit (£9.99 for brush, pot, cleaning liquid) which came with a free bottle of tyre blackener too. So i got to work on my wheels, the front ones being coated in brake dust from being at Uni:

So i sprayed off the excess dust and got to work with my special brush and cleaning solution, shown here on a different wheel:

and it then came up looking pretty impressive:

Then i moved onto the back wheels, both of which had really tough to remove stains on them. Here's a closeup of some of the stains around the valve:

So i got to work on the wheel, with much scrubbing using the brush on it's side and got it a bit cleaner. The marks shown in the last pic cannot be removed with standard cleaning, but this stuff got it off quite well, as you can see:

I couldn't recommend this stuff enough, and with the free can of tyre blackener you can't go wrong for £9.99 really.

So, that's all so far. Still to do:
-Wash, dry and wax car
-Blacken bumpers
-Blacken tyres
-Respray grille
-Clean all glass
-Either new ICE or reinstall sub

I'll keep the thread updated with any progress.

Believe me, i would love it like that all the time but the speed humps at the halls of residence i live at would disagree with it Maybe when i'm finished at Uni? Although i may sell up then.

I'm thinking 3 amps, 1 sub and 2 sets of components. But i haven't really got the time to get it all done for MGM so I might have to leave it be. Either that or i'll nip to Reef's, buy his equipment then dash back and fit it all in a major hurry possibly late into the night. But then i wouldn't have time to clean it properly.

I suppose i could always eat some Cadbury's, get food poisoning then get a few days off work.

Cheers for the replies. Martin, i only let it get that dirty because when i'm at Uni i have no way of cleaning it properly! It really annoys me too, seeing it so dirty all the time.

subs in the boot

Nope, there were no subs in the boot when that photo was taken. Just a coat.
Turns out i'll be at MGM with either no audio or a simple single amp single sub setup.

The wheel cleaner is indeed 'Wonder Wheels' and i think it is acid based but it's a risk i'm worth taking considering they're nothing special really.

Anyway, latest update is...

Mesh respray

I decided to remove all of my mesh from the bumper and respray it black, since it had begun flaking. It was sanded down, primed, painted Satin Black and then given a few coats of lacquer. I'm VERY pleased with the highly reflective, smooth finish:

It's just got to be re fibreglassed onto the bumper and then the bumper refitted to the car. Here's the car in it's current state, bumper resting very carefully on the bonnet

Tomorrow i'll give fitting the audio a go (possibly with disastrous consequences) then i'l give it a wash and a dry before taking it to my garage to blacken the bumpers and tyres. Then on Saturday when it's fully dried in my garage i'll give it a wax, polish all the windows, polish the exhaust, clean the alloys again and refit my mats.

I think i'm getting a little obsessive

To clean my wheels i use some cheap stuff i get from work it only bout £1.30 a can.

Its easy. Wet wheels & spray it on, it turns to foam the work the spunge arount the wheels, wash off jobs done

Ive also cleaned my windows wasn't that dirty anyway. Might give it another wash before MGM.

I placed it on there very gently. I checked afterwards where i had put it and there were no scratches.
There are however, 3 scratches on the bonnet from when i stood on it when drunk one night.

Cleaned it today, and refitted my sub and amp with no problems at all. Next up a quick wax, bumper and tyre blackening and tidying up the boot area and i'm sorted. Pictures tomorrow

Barber not cleaning?!
My car is now fully ready for MGM:

-Washed and waxed
-Blackened trim & tyres
-Repainted mesh
-Reinstalled sub and amp
-Interior vacuumed and interior trim cleaned
-Windows polished inside and out
-Mats washed and refitted
-Exhaust cleaned and polished

and that's about it. I'm not going to show all of the car cos it just looks the same as in my sig, but shinier. Plus you can wait to see it at MGM
But for now, here are some shots of various bits looking nice and clean:

Side view showing wheels and trim

Bonnet and vent

The roof reflecting the background really well.

And finally, a nice side shot with various shapes reflecting the surroundings.

All the hard work was well worth it in the end. I'm very happy with pretty much everything, especially the ICE working again.

UPDATE!
Since i said this would be other work aswell, i'm going to add latest additions to it.

Recently i had two new tires fitted on the front wheels. When asked what i wanted on there i had the choice of having Camacs for £30 or 'decent ones' for £35. I chose the decent ones because i value my life. When i got to the garage to have them fitted by my cousin's girlfriend's dad, he said i could have them for £30 each fully fitted. Turns out they're Avon Enviros which i'm VERY happy with. They grip immensely well in both the dry and the wet, it's just point and go now. Highly recommended for 155/65/R13 tires!

Also got my Fusion Encounter components fully fitted after 4 hours of work reshaping and door bins, screwing the crossovers onto the doorcars and mounting the tweeters on the A pillars. Here are some pictures of the finalised setup. It sounds so much better than my coaxials did!

Tweeter on A pillar

Woofer in the door bin area, with crossover mounted within the pocket area.

A different angle of the tweeter

Everything together, including nice visible wiring mod

So, that's all for now along with regular cleaning. I'll keep this thread updated when it needs it.

Well, i would do but i might not have it for much longer. After Uni i'm hoping to get a ZR, or failing that a 114. In silver. I can't really afford to spend any more money on this car!

Another quick and easy alteration made today. I sprayed the rear window wiper blanking plate in Quicksilver to match the car.

Before:

After:

Makes the back end of the car look a lot tidier. It's the little things that make a difference.

I'd love to get the 3/4 colour coded bumpers fitted, but i can't really afford them! I've seen a few other Metros in the same colour with 3/4 colour coded bumpers and they looked pretty nice.
Although i have removed the rubbing strips so it might look a bit strange from the side.

Oooh, the thread has come back from the dead!
Anyway it's a 1.1 carb and for a first car it's good enough for me. It's a 5 door so it's practical, and i still think it looks good even with the extra doors. However, there are a LOT of things that it could do with. It's missing:

-Cigarette lighter
-Rear wiper
-Intermittent wipers

Which is annoying, but i live with it.

Well, mine came with an aftermarket alarm and immobiliser fitted. I'm pretty sure you could get a Metro and make it more secure using aftermarket parts maybe?

I've got a Sterling alarm and a weird immobiliser thing where you need a specific key to press into the dash before you can start the engine.
Not sure about how you'd go about doing the conversion on a carb, but you'd have to tell your insurance about it.

Update: Rear arches are rusting again The one side has a massive orange mark running down from above the arch area to the top of the arch and a huge crack in the paintwork.
It also seems to have lost some power recently, although it is running sort of smoothly for once.

Oh, and some of the exhaust system appears to be hanging down from the bottom of the car a little bit since I smashed it off a parking bollard, a cobbled speed bump and the metal locking mechanism on the floor of my garage. I get a horrible crunching noise going over even the slightest speed humps now!

My aim now is to get the bloody thing through it's MOT in March and then keep it running until the summertime when I can sell it on and start on my new project

Did you have new arches put in or just repaired with filler last time?

Shame it's going as you've done a nice job with that car, looks very smart from all the pics I seen on here

I had new ones welded in but it was a dodgy job done quickly. It was then painted incorrectly just to cover up the black arches, then was coated in primer for about half a year before I got them prepped and resprayed. I think the rust has come through from when i left it for months on end without properly preparing it. I also didn't see to the areas behind the rear lights so those bits are coated in rust, it's quite bad when you take the lights off the back

I could try giving the repairs a go myself if they get really bad, but I think it would be best to just hope it doesn't get too bad and then sell it as soon as I can! There's also rust appearing along the bottoms of the doors and underneath the 'sil' on the rear quarter panel. And i haven't checked the floors yet.

It's a shame really because I really like the colour! However, it would probably be replaced by a 114 which I already have plans for. Plus, I want a 3 door.

Ouch - that's the worry I got with my passanger arch. I cud end up paying near 300 quid for sum1 to mess it up again i.e. not roll the arches and seal em up underneath afterwards then it's back to square one I already been caught once with the bodge filler \ spray job that cost me 150 quid defo don't want it to happen agen

Update ready for MOT tomorrow.

Had the hydrogas pumped the other week so the exhaust doesn't catch on anything anymore, but the arch rust has gotten worse, it's not driving right and the brakes are squeeking a lot recently too. More rust has also popped up along the roof seal and on the rear driver's side door.

Oh, and some t#at has kicked the area near the driver's side repeater so I now have a muddy mark and scratches there.
I have no idea how the MOT will go as I haven't had a chance to check the car properly due to having a lot of Uni work.

I would, but I can't really afford to. The arch rust is far too deep for me to have a go at on my own without making a mess of it, the roof stuff I could do easily but I just have to get the paint, and there's also a LOT of rust behind the rear light clusters which was forgotten about when the new arches were welded in. The rust behind there is far too bad to sort out now.

I'm just planning to get it through the MOT and the last term of Uni and then sell it to someone who just wants a decent little runabout! I've already got plans for my next car though if I don't get the 216 Coupe.

Turns out it's not going home just yet due to my dad injuring his foot so he won't be able to bring the replacement down. Then it's being stored until Easter in my garage and if I earn enough there is a small possibility that it could be back on the road.
