My 1993 1.1 seems to have poor response in the brakes. The pedal is firm and the car does stop but the brakes are far from keen and seem to need a lot of pressing to stop. It passed the MOT recently and the pedal isn't spongy. In the round, are the brakes on standard Metros any good or what? Any suggestions welcomed.

They need pressing.. the servo isn't massively assistive so they need a firm prod lol but saying that I don't know how 'bad' they are from over the Internet so you may have another issue! You could try new pads and see what happens

My brakes had the same symptons and the culprit was the rear brakes.
Adjust the rear brakes as follows. jack up the rear and remove the wheels then turn the adjuster until the drum locks then back the adjuster off until the drum rotates.
You will possibly have to adjust the handbrake cable after this adjustment but should be ok if the handbrake was clicking up high in the first place.
This sorted my ( i aint going to stop feeling) and the brakes are a lot better.
You could also clean the rear shoes with brake cleaner mine was full of crap inside the rear drums.
