hi all
I’ve a few strange gremlins going on with the car at the mo., its happened before and I’m pretty sure it’s the fusebox or stalk, which i both have

However that’s not the question, question is.....

fusebox, i took receipt of a good fusebox last night and I’ve no reason to doubt its serviceability, but I have read on here about dry soldered joints and a mention that the small headlight relay is soldered in?

1. i can se no joints of any sort, its a series of multi layer stamped out and formed shims almost, separated by thin plastic sheets, where are the soldered joins and what exactly goes wrong with metro fuseboxes (i mean physically not symptoms)
2. the headlight relay is not soldered in on my current one or new one so what’s all that about?

Cheers

No known issues with the fusebox then?

I've had 3 fuseboxes now... And my brake lights are intermittent again.

Well swapping the fusebox cured my headlights from switching on themselves, I'll strip the old one right down and see what I find...

OK, here goes

My old fusebox with failing headlights circuit, sidelights come on randomly, no headlights, full beam okb(common issue)

The fusebox

The headlamp relay socket (note NOT soldered in)

The laminates that make up the fusebox are damp with signs of oxidation.

This is the outer cover removed, here is the area directly behind the headlamp relay

Rivets drilled out and all laminates separated

More corrosion

Opened out like a book

Fully opened out and separated

There was no physical damage to the metal tracks but 2 were shorting behind the headlamp relay due to the melting, they could be repaired though by insulating if needed.

Note total lack of any soldered joins of any description .

Whether the damp caused high resistance and melted the relay holder is not known but if your headlights have the symptoms described above then this could well be your problem.this could do with being stickied to save others the wild goose chase
